    Getting Powerful Letters Of Recommendation

Most high school students are afraid to ask for letters of recommendation. Its a little bit awkward to ask a teacher or other trusted adult to write a glowing recommendation for you. HOWEVER, if you were a good student and established a good relationship with your teachers, theyll be more than happy to help you out with your letter of recommendation. Most students never do this so theyd be happy to help. Youre going to want to approach it the same way I approach asking for a testimonial: politely and with the majority of the work done already. When you reach out to your teacher for a letter of recommendation, youll want to give them several things:

    • A broad view of what you want them to highlight
    • 2-3 key points they should touch on
    • Your resume so they have a reference to your accomplishments

If you provide them practically everything they need, theyll be more than happy to give you an awesome letter of recommendation. In fact, many teachers will just ask you to write a draft that they can edit and sign.

    What Is A Scholarship

For colleges and universities, scholarships are financial aid awards designed to help students pay for an undergraduate degree. Sometimes a scholarship is a one-time check. Other school scholarships are renewable and provide money for students each semester or school year. These awards differ from student loans in that they dont have to be repaid.

Students might receive the money directly as a check in their name. In other cases, the money is given to the students school. In these cases, the student would then pay the school for the difference on any money owed for tuition, fees, room and board. If the scholarships and other forms of financial aid are enough to cover the direct college costs, the excess money is refunded to the student.

What are the requirements to apply schorlaship for every college ...

When you take a step back and consider the common answers to the prompt, youll be able to come up with an answer that will subvert the judges expectations and keep their attention. In my case, while other students wrote about historical figures, I chose Chris Rock, the famous comedian.

My essay went on to argue that though hes perceived simply as a comedian, hes actually a highly astute social commentator. His jokes revealed the things we want to say but wont articulate because were afraid to. I even deconstructed one of his jokes and went into an in-depth analysis of why it was an examination of the racial attitudes our society holds.

    And it worked.

My approach was offbeat yet professional. When looking for unique angles, you shouldnt make it offensive or inappropriate. Instead, aim to make it deep, personal, and a little bit against the grain.

Write Strategically Unique College Scholarship Essays

When it comes to writing an amazing scholarship essay, Ive developed a highly complex intricate process of algorithms and systems that you need to follow EXACTLY if you want your writing to soar. The steps are:

  • Figure out what most students will write about
  • Write something else
  • and thats it. Why does this work? Most scholarship essays bore judges to tears. Put yourself in the shoes of the person who will be reading your application theyre going to be reading hundreds, maybe even THOUSANDS of these a day. And the fact of the matter is 99.99999% of the applications they read will be almost exactly the same.

Oh, you got good grades? You were in a bunch of extracurriculars? That mission trip you took to Honduras junior year was life-changing?

    Get in line.

Whats particularly unique about any of those things? Not a whole lot. And if you fall into the same formula as everyone else, I guarantee you your application wont get a second glance. However, if you subvert the expectations of the scholarship judge, youll grab and hold onto their attention allowing you to properly make your case. To do that, you need to follow the aforementioned two steps.

College Walk Ons Getting Scholarships!!!!! ( Emotional Moments)

A refugee is a person outside of their home country because they were forced to flee from persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion.

The World University Service of Canada, through a partnership with the UNHCR, runs the Student Refugee Program. Qualifying refugees may enter studies at specific Canadian universities without paying tuition costs for one year. Registered refugees, who have been living in Lebanon, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, or Syria, may apply for at least three years. The applicants must be between 17 and 24, hold a secondary school diploma, be single with no children and be fluent in either English or French.

In regards to the above lists of scholarships, none of them are exhaustive lists. Many more can be found in the Scholarship section of this website.

With the volume of scholarships available, many international students can see that a Canadian scholarship is attainable. Looking for a non-traditional scholarship might be the answer for you.

Be aware that being successful with an application is not just a matter of having the highest grades. More and more institutions rely not only on high grades. Applicants nowadays are advised to illustrate that they are a well-rounded person. Volunteering, extracurricular activities, clubs, and work experience also play a part in the selection process. When required, a well-written scholarship essay will go a long way.

While you can’t underestimate their importance, you can overestimate them. Sadly, many students never even apply for scholarships due to concern over their grades . Use Networking To Find Hidden Scholarships

In an ideal world, all scholarships would have clear, easy-to-find web pages. In reality, however, much scholarship info is buried within outdated websites .

Because of this, you shouldnt rely just on the internet for finding scholarships. You should also leverage your personal connections. And to do that, you need to make friends with the right people .

I wont go too much into networking here, as we cover it in much greater depth in these articles and podcast episodes:

However, I will give you these specific networking tips for finding scholarships:

    • Get to know your professors by going to office hours and joining any organizations they moderate.
    • Ask your career planning office if they can connect you with alumni or local people who work in fields that interest you.
    • Once youve gotten to know these people, ask if they know about any scholarships that youd be a good candidate for.
    • Remember to be genuine. You want to make real connections, not just schmooze so you can get something for yourself .

Never Pay To Find Or Apply For Scholarships

    Scholarship Acceptance Letter

In the course of your scholarship search, you may come across companies who claim they can help you find secret or exclusive scholarshipsin exchange for a fee.

Dont fall for these scams. Not only are these companies lying to you, but theres also no reason to pay for scholarship help when there are already so many free resources for finding them.

Similarly, never pay to apply for a scholarship. If someone is charging you to apply for a scholarship, then theyll almost certainly take your money and disappear. Youd be better off just using that money to pay for college.

Scholarship Myth #: My B Student Cant Get An Academic Scholarship

Wrong. Even your average student can get an academic scholarship, if you apply carefully . By carefully, I mean you need to find schools where your student stands out. These are schools where your students grades and scores put her in the top 25 percent of the applicant pool. Remember, colleges use merit aid to lure top students to their campus. At many campuses, a top student is not straight-A everything in high school.

How to find these schools? Start at Enter your students SAT or ACT scores in the filterand any other requirements you have, like say locationand youll get a list of schools where your students scores are a close match or above. Use that list to find schools where your students scores and GPA are in the top 25 percent . Then head over to the Paying tab for that school and see how much in non-need based aid they offer .

How Many Scholarship Applications Should You Submit

You should apply to every scholarship for which you are eligible. Do not limit yourself to just one type of scholarship, such as less competitive scholarships, more generous scholarships and no essay scholarships.

There are many talented students, so the odds of winning a scholarship involve some luck, not just skill. You can increase your odds of winning a scholarship by applying to more scholarships.

But, dont apply to a scholarship if you dont match the selection criteria or if youve missed the deadline. Your scholarship application will not be considered.

Dont get discouraged when you get rejections. Even students who win a gazillion dollars in scholarships get dozens of rejections for every scholarship they win.

Isnt Applying For Every Scholarship A Lot Of Work

Applying to many scholarships is not as much work as it might seem.

After your first half-dozen or so scholarship applications, youll find that you can start reusing your old scholarship essays, tailoring them to each scholarship providers goals. Just remember to change the name of the scholarship program if you mention it in the essay.

Applying to scholarships is a worthwhile use of your time, even for the less generous scholarships. Suppose you apply to 10 scholarships worth $500 each and you win one. If it takes an hour to complete each scholarship application, thats $500 for 10 hours of work, or $50 an hour. That pays better than babysitting or shoveling snow.

3 Tips to get D1 Colleges to offer you scholarships

Youre sitting down at your laptop, the scholarship essay prompt is in front of you, and youre ready to dive in. Before you write a single word STOP!

Think about the other people applying for the exact same scholarship what are THEY going to be writing about? Whats the easy answer to the prompt and how can you subvert that? Back when I was applying, I had one essay prompt that asked, If you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be and why? Classic prompt. So I started thinking. Nelson Mandela? Mehthat would be the logical choice. And to be honest, dinner with Mandela wouldnt be the most exciting thing for a 17-year-old kid. Maybe President Clinton? Thatd be cool for bragging rights but what would we talk about? Given this prompt, I could have just written some BS about Mandela or the President, but I would have sounded like every other person applying for the scholarship. Plus, I didnt really want to meet them. Its almost like the people applying forget that its a competition. Would a coach say to his players, Okay guys, were playing against every team in our division next week, so were just going to do the same plays over and over? No.

So why would you want to do that too? So when it came to who I wanted to have dinner with, I decided to go with my gut and pick someone different: Chris Rock, which leads me to the next step

While some of the money may be strictly for tuition, many external scholarships can be used for anything, including rent, groceries, books, a laptop, and more.
