What Is A Good Sat Or Act Score For Scholarships

ACT score so high scored two scholarships

Generally speaking, the higher your SAT or ACT score, the more likely you will get a scholarship.

While the standard for a good SAT score varies, you should shoot for a 1200 or higher.

A good ACT score is above the 75th percentile for whatever school you are applying to. That means you are in the top quarter of scores and more likely to be considered for a scholarship.

Why Consider Using Act Scores For A Merit Scholarship

More than 1.9 million people took the ACT test in 2018. One study reports that a decade ago, one of every 2,600 students got a perfect score. In 2018, one of every 500 students nailed a perfect score.

But you dont have to get a perfect ACT score to get a merit scholarship. Otherwise, all 4 year colleges and universities in the United States accept ACT test scores.

Here are a few other reasons to use your ACT scores for merit scholarships:

  • Taking the ACT may help boost your chances of winning a scholarship from colleges and scholarship organizations.
  • Some colleges award scholarships based on your ACT scores. For example, offer scholarships ranging from $40,000 to $84,000 based on a combination of test scores, class rank, and GPA.
  • Higher test scores may also lead to more scholarship dollars. For instance, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville offers $5,000 awards per year for ACT scores between 34 to 36.
  • Being rewarded for good grades is one way to make college more affordable. At last check, the average amount of scholarship and grant aid received by undergrads is $11,810.
  • Unlike a loan, you do not have to pay back ACT scholarship funds. Though you do have to abide by their terms. You should also strive to maintain a specific GPA.
  • Certain ACT/SAT scores may place you in the running for a full ride scholarship.
  • Recipients and finalists of the National Merit Scholarship may also be eligible for other awards and aid. The National Merit Scholarship looks at PSAT scores.

How Can I See My Scores

When available, your scores are posted online and accessed using your MyACT account.

ACT Customer Support cannot provide your scores by phone, email, chat, or fax.

  • Multiple choice scores are normally available two weeks after each national test date, but it can sometimes take up to eight weeks.
  • Writing scores are normally available about two weeks afteryour multiple-choice scores.

If you took the writing test, your overall scores are not officially reported until your writing scores have been added. Viewingyour scores online does not speed up reporting.

Regarding the October and February test dates only: Scores from these test dates are available within 3-8 weeks. During these test dates, ACT performs equating activities in order to ensure that scores reported have a constant meaning across all test forms.

Do Public Schools Offer Scholarship Programs

Many public institutions give scholarships, just like private schools. However, financial aid awards granted by public schools are not as huge as those being offered by private institutions, including smaller ones. However, public schools are known to give more money for National Merit Scholarships.

Going to public colleges and universities is ideal for students who are on a tight budget.

Thats because the cost of attending them is so much cheaper than the cost of going to private schools. This is especially true for in-state students the average difference between in-state tuition and out-of-state tuition at a public school is $8,990.

Despite being cheaper, a lot of students from low-income families cannot afford to go to public schools.

As a matter of fact, according to a 2017 analysis on the college affordability problem from the Institute for Higher Education Policy , college is unaffordable for most low- and middle-income students. Of the 2,000 schools examined, the investigation found that only one to five percent are affordable to low-income families.

$9,000 thats by how much many four-year public institutions missed students affordability threshold.

The good news is that numerous public colleges and universities also offer scholarships to make earning a degree even more affordable. Whats even more impressive is the fact that they tend to give more money for National Merit Scholarships than their private counterparts.

Test Optional You Should Still Take The Sat/act

Schools that are test optional do not require standardized test scores as part of a complete application. Instead, you have the chance to decide for yourself if your scores accurately reflect your abilities and potential to excel in college. Even if every school on your college list is test optional, it’s still a smart idea to takeand prep for!at least one standardized test.

For one, optional doesnt mean that that colleges won’t consider your test scores if you submit them. Without them, greater weight is given to other aspects of your application such as your transcript, essay, extracurricular and letters of recommendation. If youre happy with your scores, go ahead and include with them your application.

Beyond getting in, your SAT & ACT test scores could qualify you for merit-based financial aid . Higher test scores can lead to more scholarship dollars, which mean more options for you!

Nothing can change a students fortune faster than a big increase on the SAT or ACT.

The Psat And The National Merit Scholarship

How to Score Over a 30 on the ACT! TIPS AND ADVICE

Before taking the SAT, high school students take the PSAT, the Preliminary SAT exam. Many students gloss over the PSAT as simply a practice exam, which, in a sense, it is. However, if you knock the PSAT out of the park, you could be staring a $2500 scholarship straight in the face. The National Merit Scholarship is awarded on a rolling basis to students that receive remarkably high scores on the PSAT. Every admission period, a batch of 15,000 or so finalists is selected from all PSAT takers, approximately half of which are awarded the scholarship. Make sure you keep this information in mind before you sit the PSAT exam, because this scholarship could change a lot about your college career.

As a shortcut, here are the schools we’re going to detail:

Automatic Scholarships For National Merit

What scholarships can you qualify for based entirely on your SAT or ACT ...

Before we get into the scholarship list, we’ll also highlight another source of money based mainly on test scores: National Merit.

As we have covered in past posts, the National Merit competition recognizes the top PSAT scorers in each state. While there is a $2,500 scholarship you can earn through the competition itself, you can also get big scholarships from colleges through National Merit.

You can get anything from a small scholarship to a full ride, depending on the school. As a rough rule of thumb, public universities are more likely to give more money for National Merit, though there are exceptions.

At Loyola University Chicago, a private college, you can get $2,000 for being a National Merit finalistif you name Loyola as your first-choice school with the National Merit Corporation.

But this is just the tip of the iceberg of National Merit scholarships. To learn more about sponsoring universities, read here.

In Response To The Covid Pandemic And The Lack Of Safe Testing Opportunities Most Colleges Who Previously Required An Sat Or Act Score Adopted A Test

A test-optional admissions policy means that a college will consider standardized test scores if submitted, but will review your application for admission without test scores if you choose not to submit. Far fewer collegesbut including all colleges within both the University of California and Cal State systemshave gone completely test-free and do not consider test scores at all for admission, even if submitted.

But does having a test-optional admissions policy mean that a college is test-optional for merit scholarship consideration? Short answer: It depends.

Many colleges have fully embraced the spirit of test-optional admissions and extended that policy to their scholarship process, considering SAT or ACT scores if you submit them, but giving you full consideration for scholarships if you dont. Without standardized testing, merit scholarship eligibility may be based largely on GPA, or on a holistic review of your entire admissions application, including factors like grades, curriculum rigor, extracurriculars, recommendations, and demographics.

Take note, however, that some colleges that have adopted a test-optional admissions policy still recommend that you submit standardized test scores for scholarship consideration. These colleges may reserve automatic or higher-level scholarship consideration for students submitting testing.

What Is The Qualifying Score And How Much Can I Receive

ACT Scores From 26 To 30 Scholarships

The qualifying ACT and SAT scores for students who will graduate in the current academic year are re-evaluated and announced each fall. These qualifying scores are based on the scores of students who were high school seniors in the previous academic year. For example, the 2021-2022 qualifying scores are based on the test results of all 2021 Missouri high school seniors. Because the minimum score is set by a percent of test takers, that score is subject to change annually.

If you took the ACT or SAT as a high school junior or sophomore, your score will be accepted as long as it meets the qualifying score announced during your senior year in high school.

The following table displays the qualifying ACT scores, along with the statutory maximum and final award amounts for the 2021 high school graduates . The final award amounts are dependent on the amount of funds allocated for the program during the 2021 legislative session for the 2021 graduates.

Award amounts are not available during summer terms.
