How Many People Get The Uva Jefferson Scholarship

Every year, UVA awards the Jefferson Scholarship to a select few students. The number of recipients varies from year to year. However, it is but typically between 30 and 40 students are chosen.

The scholarship covers full tuition, room and board, and other expenses for four years of undergraduate study.

To be considered for the scholarship, you must first be admitted to UVA. Once youve been admitted, youll need to fill out an additional application and submit it by the deadline.

    What Is The Jefferson Scholarship

    The Jefferson Scholarship is a need-based scholarship awarded to students who demonstrate financial need and academic merit.

    The scholarship covers tuition, room and board, books, and other expenses. This covers for up to four years of undergraduate study in current applicable institution.

    To be eligible for the scholarship, students must first apply and be admitted to the college. Then, they must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid and submit it to the financial aid office.

    You may be eligible for VA education benefits if youre the child or spouse of a Veteran and one of these descriptions listed is true of the Veteran.

    One of these must be true:

    • The Veteran is permanently and totally disabled due to a service-connected disability, or
    • The Veteran died while on active duty or as a result of a service-connected disability

    If youre a dependent who doesnt meet the above criteria, you may still qualify for VA education benefits if the Veteran or service member transferred some or all of their Post-9/11 GI Bill entitlement to you while they were on active duty.

    Who Qualify For The Fry Scholarship

    The Fry Scholarship is available to the spouses and children of service members who died in the line of duty on or after September 11, 2001.

    If you are a spouse, you must have been married to the service member for at least one year at the time of their death. They require ages 18 and 26.

    The Fry Scholarship pays for tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to the maximum amount allowed by law.

    History Of The Fry Scholarship

    The Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2009, Public Law 111-32, created the Fry Scholarship. This amended the Post-9/11 GI Bill to provide educational assistance benefits to the children of service members who died in the line of duty after Sept. 10, 2001.

    The Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act of 2014 expanded eligibility to include surviving spouses.

    The proposed Fry Scholarship Enhancement Act of 2021 would extend benefits to spouses and children of service members who died from a service-connected disability within 120 days of serving in the Armed Forces.

    On March 8, 2006, Marine Gunnery Sgt. John D. Fry was killed in action while disarming an improvised explosive device in Anbar Province, Iraq, according to the VA. At 28 years old, he left behind his wife, Malia, and three young children.

    The Fry Scholarship came out of her efforts to honor her husbands memory and sacrifice. and those have helped send hundreds of children of fallen service members to college and other postsecondary educational efforts.

    How Are Applicants Selected For Jefferson Scholarship

    To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid by March 1.

    The FAFSA is used to determine an applicants eligibility for federal, state, and institutional financial aid.

    Students who are selected for the scholarship will be notified of their award in early April.

    • You will receive a letter in the mail from the VA indicating your enrollment has been processed. The VA will send book money , not to exceed $1000 a year. The book money allowance starts over every fall.
    • On the first of the month, you can expect a direct deposit of BAH for the previous month, if applicable. You are paid for days you are enrolled short months are pro-rated. If you live on campus, BAH funds must be applied to your housing bill. Go to your myBoiseState student center to make payments.
    • Once the VA processes your enrollment, they send their portion of your tuition directly to Boise State Student Financials/Account Maintenance. If your eligibility is not 100%, the remainder of the tuition needs to be paid prior to the end of the term.
    • If your financial aid paid any portion of your tuition, any overpayment will be deposited directly to your student center account. Be sure that your direct deposit information is current.

    • You can be married or unmarried.
    • If you turned 18 or graduated from high school before January 1, 2013, you can get a Fry Scholarship until youre 33 years old.
    • If you turn 18 or graduate from high school after January 1, 2013, you can get a Fry Scholarship at any age over 18 or after you graduate .
    • If your parent was a member of the Selected Reserve and died from a service-connected disability while not on active duty, you can get a Fry Scholarship at any time, no matter how old you are.
    • If your parent died in the line of duty before August 1, 2011, you may qualify for both the Fry Scholarship and the Survivors and Dependents Educational Assistance program. But you can use only one program at a time. We cap combined benefits at 81 months of full-time training.
