We tracked down some of CSUs Boettcher scholars and got the inside scoop on how they made it through the application process.
The essay is your chance to shine. Your academics are important, but they already know youre a high achiever. Talk about how you got there, where youve struggled, how youve made it happen when things dont go exactly how you want. South’s William Highfill Receives Boettcher Scholarship
He is the founder of Protect Pueblo, a swimmer and dancer, valued employee of the Pizza Ranch, and a member of Student Council, National Honor Society, Environmental Club and Spanish Club.
And now, South High Schools William Highfill can add another shining notation to an already impressive resume: Boettcher Scholar.
The Colt senior, who plans to attend the University of Denver in the fall, will do so on a full-ride, four-year Boettcher Scholarship, one of the most competitive and coveted endowments in the state.
Each year, about 1,500 Colorado high-ranking seniors apply for the scholarship, which covers virtually all collegiate expenses: tuition, fees, a book allowance, and an annual stipend for living expenses.
Boettcher Scholars are selected for their academic achievement, outstanding character, and service and leadership in their schools and communities, said Katie Kramer, President and CEO of the Boettcher Foundation. The Boettcher Scholarship is an investment in our states doers and difference makers.
It not only recognizes their past achievements but also their future impact on the State of Colorado.
One of 100 Boettcher finalists, William was notified by letter of the monumental development.
There, in the Pizza Ranch, William felt years of stress immediately melt away.
Earlier this month, William was interviewed by representatives of the Boettcher Foundation: his final step in the application process.
What You Need To Know About The Boettcher Scholarship Program 2022
Since 1952, the Boettcher Foundation has awarded more than $65 million in undergraduate scholarships to many of Colorados best and brightest students. That translates to more than 2,400 current and alumni Boettcher Scholars. Annually, more than 1,500 students apply for the 42 available Boettcher Scholarships.
Award recipients, on average rank in the top 2% of their graduating classes and have an average sat score around 1400.
The award is considered full-ride and allows Boettcher scholars to attend any accredited Colorado University for4 years without significant expenditure by students. 42 students are awarded Boettcher Scholarships each year, representing about 4% of applicants.
Two District 6 Students Named Boettcher Scholars
Two seniors attending Greeley-Evans School District 6 high schools have been selected to receive the prestigious Boettcher Scholarship.
Herminia Bocanegra, a senior at Northridge High School, and Yahir Chairez-Salazar, a senior at Greeley Central High School, were recently informed they have been named Boettcher scholars, a highly competitive scholarship program that includes a lengthy application process, writing three essays, personal interviews and multiple letters of recommendation.
I am completely overwhelmed about the scholarship, Chairez-Salazar said. All my stress just rolled from my shoulders.
I was so excited, Bocanegra said. My mom was like, I knew you had this in the bag. It just means so much to me and my family.
The Boettcher Foundation awards 40 scholarships per year that pay the full cost of tuition at any four-year college or university in Colorado, as well as fees, a book allowance and an annual stipend for living expenses. Thousands of students undergo a rigorous application and interview process to compete for this prestigious award. Students are selected based on their superior scholastic abilities, evidence of leadership and involvement, service to the community and their school, and outstanding character.
Its more than the money, Chairez-Salazar said. This gives me the opportunity to pay back everyone who has supported me my family, my teachers, my coaches, former teachers and coaches everyone.

Boettcher Scholarship Annual Events
Part of receiving this special Colorado scholarship is the camaraderie that Boettcher Scholars develop with one another. The foundation hosts a variety of events for the entire Boettcher Scholar community throughout the year.
This includes an annual holiday party at the Governors Residence at Boettcher Mansion, networking events with alumni and current scholars, community service days, leadership programming and a weekend-long scholar orientation.
one of our favorite events for new Boettcher Scholars is our teacher recognition awards program. Most Boettcher Scholars agree they wouldnt be where they are today without great teachers.
The teacher recognition awards program allows scholars to honor the teacher who had the most impact on their lives. In the spirit of giving back to our communities, teachers who receive the honor are awarded a $1,000 grant to be used toward an educational program or project to benefit students at their schools.
Students From Colorado Springs Area Win Boettcher Scholarship
The four-year scholarship will cover nearly all expenses at the Colorado school of the recipients choice, including full tuition, fees, books and a stipend for living expenses.
All three area students will attend schools in the University of Colorado system, according to the release. Janney and Kemp will attend at the Boulder campus, while Moreno will attend at the Denver campus in the fall.

Boettcher Scholarship At Uccs
The Boettcher Scholarship program is a merit-based scholarship for Colorado high school seniors. Scholars receive an annual fixed amount of $20,000 per year from Boettcher for four years. UCCS will then use institutional, merit, and/or need-based support to support up to the total cost of attendance for each Scholar minus travel and other expenses.
Applying for this prestigious award can lead to special benefits at UCCS, even if you arent selected as a recipient. We offer a variety of special benefits to students who are ranked as semi-finalists or finalists. Semi-Finalists: $20,000 over four yearsEach November, Boettcher will announce which applicants made it to the semi-finalist level. We know these students have met rigorous standards to qualify for this honor. UCCS guarantees each of these students a minimum of $20,000 in grants and scholarships over four years at UCCS. Thats a guaranteed $5,000 off of your tuition per year! Many semifinalists will qualify for much more by applying to UCCS Scholarships before the Feb. 1st deadline.
The UCCS Scholarship Application must be submitted by February 1st to ensure you are considered for the most scholarship dollars possible.

What Is The Application Procedure
An essay must be completed in a word processing program like Microsoft Word and then copying the essay into the application for the accurate word count.
ACT/SAT scorecards must be submitted to the foundation directly from the testing agencies.
Boettcher Scholarship finalists will be interviewed in-person in Denver on March 5, 6, 9 or 10, 2020. There cannot be any exceptions made.
The candidates must present their Free Application for Federal Student Aid application to determine his/her family’s financial position to pay for their education.

The Boettcher Scholarship is a four-year, full-tuition and partial living expenses merit-based academic scholarship awarded to graduating Colorado high school students. Award recipients, on average, rank in the top 2% of their graduating classes and have an average SAT score around 1400 .
The award is considered “full-ride” and allows Boettcher Scholars to attend any accredited Colorado university for 4 years without significant expenditure by the student. 50 students are awarded Boettcher Scholarships each year, beginning with the class of 2022, representing about 3% of applicants. They are selected from 100 finalists who are interviewed by the Foundation board. 300 semi-finalists are required to add a teacher recommendation to their application with the hopes of advancing to be a finalist. In the 20212022 season over 1,600 students applied. If a student declines the scholarship, alternates are promoted from the pool of finalists so that all scholarships are used.
The program was started in 1952 with the intention of keeping high-performing students in Colorado. The most popular destination has been the University of Denver, although significant numbers of Scholars have attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, Colorado State University, Colorado College and the Colorado School of Mines. The associated Teacher Recognition Awards Program was started in 1992.
How To Apply For The Scholarship
- The Boettcher Scholarship procedures information is distributed to Colorado high school counselors every September, this is because it is a merit-based scholarship for high school seniors,
- The high school counselors for each school circulate relevant information on how to apply for the Boettcher Scholarship to qualified candidates or seniors every September.
- The students who are qualified or eligible to apply can now meet the counselor for their school for more information on how to apply online. Only in rare instances are Boettcher Scholarship online application invitations distributed directly by the foundation .
- Both the student and counselor portions of the application should be submitted online.
- Transcripts and test results of the student must be sent through mail to the Boettcher foundation using the appropriate foundation code to the corresponding testing center .
- Semifinalists are requested to submit three letters of recommendation by mid- to late-December.

Boettcher Scholarship Eligibility Requirements
To be qualified for the Boettcher Scholarship 2022, there are some requirements needed which includes the following:
- The applicants must have lived in Colorado and completed their junior and senior years of high school or a graduating Colorado High School.
- Must be permanent residents or citizens of the United States
- Meet the requirements for Colorado ASSET and one of or below:
- Hold legal status in the United States or
- Meet the requirements and have applied or started the process of applying for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals
- Relatives of Boettcher Trustees, officers or employees of the Boettcher Foundation are not eligible.
- Students who are applying for college scholarships in Colorado should consider applying for the Boettcher Scholarship.

Aidan Janney of Coronado, Chloe Kemp of Pine Creek and William Navarrete Moreno of Colorado Springs Early Colleges were tapped for the Boettcher Foundation Scholarship as part of the largest scholar group in the history of the program.
Established in 1952, the Boettcher Foundation typically awards 42 scholarships annually, selecting the most impressive candidates from the roughly 1,500 students who apply each year.
But this year, in celebration of the scholarship programs 70th year, the nonprofit expanded the program, selecting 50 top students from the record 1,700 who applied.
Whats Included In A Boettcher Scholarship
Campus Enrichment Programming
The Foundation provides funding to the partner Colorado colleges to enrich the college experience for Scholars. In the past, this has included graduate school/career prep opportunities, activities for Scholars at their respective institution, and opportunities to attend cultural events throughout Colorado.
These grants offer Boettcher Scholars additional funding, allowing them to accomplish special learning experiences.
Educational Enrichment Grants
- Each Boettcher Scholar can apply for a one-time $3,000 grant to complete a project/program in the area of academic/professional development, internships, research, and special classes.
International Education Grants
- Boettcher Scholarship recipients can apply for funding to spend either a semester or a year studying abroad.

Colorado high school seniors who meet our eligibility requirements are invited to apply directly through our website. The scholarship application process is rigorous and time-intensive, so we encourage you talk to your high school counselor to determine whether you are a competitive candidate. NOTE: For information about how we are responding to COVID-related complications, please visit our FAQs page.
Note: If you do not have a test score to report due to COVID-19, the results of this quiz may not be accurate, so please discuss this scholarship with your high school counselor to determine if you would be a viable candidate.
Applications can be accessed directly through our website on the Scholarship Application page. Applications open in early September and are due no later than 5:00 p.m. on November 1 of your senior year.
Your high school counselor will need to fill out additional forms and submit an official transcript, so we encourage you to be in frequent communication with your counselor to ensure that all deadlines are met. If you were able to take the ACT or SAT, we require your scores to be mailed directly from the testing agency/agencies to the Boettcher Foundation, even if those scores appear on your high school transcript.
