College Track scholarships are awarded to athletes by the coaching staff of each program. Each year coaches evaluate their teams needs and use their scholarships to award their top performing athletes as well as try and attract new athletes. For this reason, most scholarships are partial scholarships as coaches are dividing their track scholarships up to attract several top athletes.
In order to be a scholarship athlete you need to be able to come in and show potential early to be scoring points at the conference, regional and national level. For more information on track and field recruiting and how scholarships are awarded based on your event go here.

A scholarship is money awarded to students attending universities in the United States with the purpose of reducing the cost of the education and living costs. A scholarship varies from 1-100% of the schools total costs and may cover tuition fees, apartment, food and text books. A 100% scholarship will cover all of these costs for a student.
There are different types of scholarships: sports scholarship , academic scholarships and international scholarships. It is the coach of the school team that determines how much sports scholarship he/she can give a student. It is possible to get a combination of the different scholarships.

College Track And Field Recruiting
When it comes to recruiting and scholarships, its not just about your best time, throw, or jump. In fact, coaches are considering your potential, coachability, and how well youll fit in their program. And each event is recruited differently.
Here are some of the things coaches are looking for:
- Sprinters who can compete in multiple events can often negotiate the biggest scholarship.
- Middle distance runners often need to run cross country in addition to the 400m, 800m, and 1500m races, and the more versatile you are, the more money you can demand.
- Distance runners usually run cross country and indoor and outdoor track, making their sport a year-round endeavor and their position on the team indispensable.
- Throwers include shot put and discus, but also javelin and hammer. If the latter two events are your specialty, youre unique and have a greater chance of scoring a scholarship because the events are so rare at the high school level.
- Jumpers get higher scholarships if they are competitive in multiple events.
When College Coaches Can First Contact You
Before we get into when colleges can offer scholarships, lets address when their coaches are even allowed to first contact you. You may have heard about Johnny or Jane so-and-so getting offered a full scholarship from a college coach when they were in seventh grade. This scenario is extremely unlikely. Most Division I and Division II coaches are not allowed to reach out to an athlete before June 15th of the students sophomore year in high school. This does not mean, however, that the coaches are not recruiting. They are looking at athletes early on in seventh, eighth and ninth grades but they cannot commence a conversation with a student that young. There are ways, however, that coaches skirt this contact rule. For example, they may reach out to a club coach and then the club coach will tell the athlete to contact the college coach. This avoids direct contact by the college coach. And by all means, students can reach out to the college coaches themselves at any time.

Track And Field Scholarship Standards
Track and field standards are used by coaches as benchmarks for recruiting purposes, but its important to remember that these standards vary, even within division, and each school has its own set.
If youre a male track athlete, seeking a place on a sports team roster, take a look at the following track and field recruiting standards and consider how they line up with each other and your personal bests.
If your times or distances are competitive, youve got a better chance of landing a scholarship. The more competitive and valuable you are to the team, the more likely the coach will give you a hefty scholarship.

How Good Do You Need To Be To Get A Track Scholarship
Unlike other college sports, coaches arent watching hours of film and evaluating athletes at camps to know if they are going to be good enough for their team. Track and field is simple in the fact that either you can get the time or marks or you cant. That being said, each program has different needs and philosophies when it comes to awarding scholarship money. Unlike other college sports ,most track coaches will be very upfront about what time or mark you will need to make their team and to get a scholarship. The best thing you can do is contact the coaches staff and ask them what it takes to make their team and possibly earn a college track scholarship at their program.
