+how Scholarships Affect Financial Aid
University scholarship awards disburse in accordance with the University’s financial aid award policy. Consistent with University policy, the total annual aid amount awarded to a student, including all scholarships and grants, cannot exceed cost of attendance at the University of Minnesota Duluth.
Financial aid awards may be reduced for students whose total aid exceeds the cost of their program for the academic year, as determined by the Office of Financial Aid.
When you receive a scholarship, your existing financial aid awards will be reviewed and adjustments may be made based on the receipt of your scholarship. You may see a reduction in other types of aid, such as loans, work-study, or institutional aid.
The University of Minnesota Duluth will allow you to receive the maximum benefits of any scholarships within the US Department of Education guidelines.
Tips For Applying To Scholarships
Applying for scholarships can be a big headache. Now that you just got done applying to college, or in the midst of it, you have a million more applications you need to fill out?!? When its for something as important as finances, it can be even more intimidating. We get it. Were here to help. To maximize your chances of success, try these tips:
- Before you do anything else, be sure to maximize institution-based financial aid and merit scholarships. We mean before even applying to the scholarships in this post! In general, schools have a LOT more money to give than outside organizations. Youll want to utilize every merit scholarship at your disposal before putting all your effort into outside scholarships. Check out this post on tried and true methods of winning merit scholarships.
- Survey your niche. In addition to being a Minnesota student, are you the child of a veteran? A police officer? A firefighter? Were you homeschooled? Do any faith-based organizations you are a part of offer scholarships? Do you play a sport? Were you a member of JROTC? All of these things, and many more, have specific scholarships that YOU can apply for! Go for one niche at a time, craft a killer essay about your experience with it, and apply away.

University of Minnesota scholarships are highly competitive. We use the same academic and context factors from our holistic admissions review process. The strongest consideration in the decision is given to the academic factors, and no single factor is the determining factor in the decision.
