Nontraditional Students: Balancing Work And School
Nontraditional students face unique challenges that can make returning to school stressful. The time commitment required to succeed can be particularly burdensome for distance learners, particularly those who work full time. Time spent in class, doing homework, and studying is time they can’t spend working, taking care of family, and managing a household.
The cost of school is another barrier. College is increasingly expensive for everyone. And nontraditional students often don’t have the family support or financial resources that other students enjoy.
Nontraditional students also often have expenses like daycare and mortgage payments that make finding the money to pay for school even more difficult. These challenges emphasize the need online students have for scholarships.
Some Scholarships Funds Are Sent Directly To Students
Most students and parents assume scholarship awards are sent directly to the college or university that will be attended. While some scholarships do work that way , a significant portion actually sends the money directly to the student who won.
For some students, this can feel a bit intimidating, especially if this is the most money that has entered a bank account with their name on it. But it isnât something to stress about. Instead, just send a check to the school for the tuition, and everything will be set.
But, why would a scholarship choose to send the money to the student in the first place? Because it provides the winner some flexibility. And that flexibility applies directly to our next point.

How Scholarship Money Is Used
So, it’s time to go to college. Your grades are tight, you’ve applied to your top schools, and you’ve just been awarded a $1,000 scholarship as a prize in the local poetry contest . Things look pretty good. Sure, you weren’t lucky enough to get a free ride scholarship that pays for tuition, books and living expenses, but every little bit helps. Even a meager $500 scholarship can mean the difference between eating hot mac and cheese in the cafeteria or rummaging in dumpsters for old bagels, right?
But scholarships do carry some advantages. One perk is that they make students much more attractive to universities. Money that you bring in as a student means less money that your school actually has to allocate to pay for you to study and live there. These days, it’s impossible for most financial aid programs to offer support for all students. Schools everywhere in this economy are strapped for cash, slashing budgets and reducing services left and right, so any extra money that comes in from scholarships takes some of the pressure off. For every student who brings in money on a scholarship, the money that would have gone to them can be spent on funding other students’ educations.
Next up, we’ll hunt down those elusive scholarships.

Scholarships That Pay Directly To Student
hey everyone!! Im looking for ways to help my parents out with the cost of duke, but our outside scholarship policy is a little tricky to navigate.
When an outside scholarship check arrives at their office, they first use the money to cover any loan expectation or work study expectation that is built into my financial aid package. Then, they use that money to replace grant money . The money only reduces family contribution if the entire grant is eliminated by accumulated outside scholarship money. Does anyone know of any outside scholarships that pay the student directly?
thanks for any answers < 3
Its not really that tricky. Any outside scholarships that pay you directly still have to be reported to the school.
Yes, you will have to report any outside scholarships to the college. There are tax implications too, depending on how that outside money gets spent.
They will not send you the check. It sounds like you are trying to cheat the system by not notifying the college. That would get you expelled.
Agreed with above. In other words, there is no advantage of getting outside scholarships that exceed your loan amount if you are receiving grant money from the institution. Dont try to find workarounds to this – its dishonest.
