Type 1 Diabetes Scholarship

A new hope for type 1 diabetes | Bernie Tuch, Australian Foundation for Diabetes Research

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic autoimmune illness in which your pancreas stops producing insulin. Type 1 diabetes may be caused by a variety of reasons, including genetics and some viruses. Although type 1 diabetes typically manifests in infancy or adolescence, it can manifest in adulthood. Type 1 diabetes can affect anyone at any age, while the most common age of diagnosis is between the ages of 4 and 6 and during early puberty .

Nobody knows for certain why some people get type 1 diabetes. Doctors and scientists believe it is caused by a person’s genes. However, simply having the diabetes genes is unlikely to be sufficient. Something else is most likely required. Scientists are investigating if additional factors, such as certain viral infections, a person’s birth weight, or their nutrition, may make someone who already has the genes for type 1 diabetes more likely to develop it.

To support their education and medical costs, students with type 1 diabetes may apply for aid. Whether you’re in college or high school, there’d definitely be some form of aid for you. This could be a scholarship, a grant, or other bursary type.

Scholarships for Type 1 Diabetes: 34.2 million Americans, or more than 1 in 10, suffer from diabetes. As they must balance their studies with the responsibility of managing their diabetes, diabetics face additional difficulties in their educational endeavours. Fortunately, there are certain diabetes scholarships available that are specifically for individuals with diabetes to help lower the cost of a college education.

Financially stressed college students who use Pell Grants and Federal Direct Loans to pay for higher education expenses play crucial roles in federal programs. The first step toward obtaining funds for education is submitting the regular request for federal help for all college students, but notably for those from distinctive student demographics.

When you look at the list above, it becomes apparent that there really are not enough scholarships for students with diabetes to go around. Type 2 diabetics are certainly not getting the attention they need in the scholarship area. Type 1 diabetics have more award offerings to choose from. What if you are an average student? Can you get money awarded to help with your college?

To give you some tips, tricks and hints here, you first need to go visit your guidance counselor at your high school. They can talk you through the process to apply for grants, including federal Pell Grants up to $5,000 per year. These are income based, and so you will need to qualify in that area.

There are federal student loans of course, and parent issued loans to cover expenses. All of these resources will be accessed by you and your parents by completing the FAFSA . If you have a tax return, it will get uploaded into your FAFSA. Your parents tax return will get uploaded also. Once you have completed your FAFSA, the amount of your family contribution is determined.

At this point, you can decide whether or not you want to go on a more exhaustive search for more funding through scholarships. There are many scholarships that are not specifically for diabetics that you may still qualify for. There are many for general disabilities that do include diabetes. Your guidance counselor will be a great resource during this time. You should also check with the college or university that you attend.
