    Who Is Eligible?

    Children, spouses and financial dependents of those who died as a direct result of the American Airlines Flight 587 crash on November 12, 2001 in Belle Harbor, Queens, New York.

    Additionally, students must:

    • Study at an approved postsecondary institution in New York State.
    • Have graduated from high school in the United States, earned a high school equivalency diploma by passing a Test Assessing Secondary Completion formally known as a GED, or passed a federally approved Ability to Benefit test as defined by the Commissioner of the State Education Department.
    • Be enrolled as a full-time student taking 12 or more credits per semester.
    • Be matriculated in an approved program of study
    • Be in good academic standing.
    • Not be in default on any State or federal student loan or on any repayment of state awards.

    The New York State Tuition Assistance Program helps eligible New York residents pay tuition at approved schools in New York State. Depending on the academic year in which you begin study, an annual TAP award can be up to $5,000. Because TAP is a grant, it does not have to be paid back.

      TAP is available for students attending SUNY, CUNY, and not-for-profit independent degree-granting colleges on a part-time basis.

      To be eligible for TAP, you must:

    Out-of-State Students Pay In-State Tuition at Montclair State

    New York is one of the few states to offer a grant program specifically directed at part-time students attending a post-secondary program. Other programs may also help part-time students, but the Aid for Part-Time Study program actually offers students who meet the requirements up to $1,500 per academic year. There is a separate application for this program, and it can be obtained through the students financial aid office.

    Students who have a proven record of academic performance may be eligible for a New York Scholarship for Academic Excellence. This program will provide highly motivated students with up to $1,500 per year of study. There are also fifth-year awards with this program.

    The New York Regents Health Care Opportunity Scholarship program is specifically for students who are studying the fields of medicine and dentistry. It provides up to $10,000 per academic year of study for students who agree to complete a period of required service in a qualifying health care institution.     The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant is awarded to undergraduate students in low-income settings who want to continue their education by attending graduate school.
