SUU offers scholarship for human trafficking survivors

Being rescued by U.S. Immigration after four years in slavery, I am so thankful to be free. A community of Catholic sisters had a job opening for housekeeping. I worked during the day and started to go to ESL classes at night. After that I took a certified nurse assistant course, GED, computer and driving classes. These opportunities changed my life and my familys life. The opportunity opened doors for my future and helped to make me an independent and strong woman and motivated me to give back to my community.

Suu Partners With Malouf Foundation To Create Scholarship For Trafficking Survivors

August 03, 2021 |Category: Academics

Southern Utah University is partnering with the Malouf Foundation to create a new scholarship opportunity. Funded through SUU by a network of donors, including the So & So Group, the Juniper Scholarship will help survivors of trafficking and exploitation earn a college degree through SUUs $9,000 online Bachelor of General Studies program, commonly known as Speedway. The online application will be available at the end of August, but interested individuals can start the process by emailing the Malouf Foundation at .

The Malouf Foundation is an incredible organization that provides long-term healing, support and stability to survivors of child trafficking and abuse crimes, said SUU Interim President Mindy Benson. Its an honor to partner with the Malouf Foundation and other generous donors to create the Juniper Scholarship. We believe higher education is the door that opens opportunities to everyone, especially those from underserved communities.

Kacie Malouf, co-founder and board chair of the Malouf Foundation, said, Our goal is to give survivors every opportunity to heal and move forward, and for many of them, continuing their education is an important part of that journey. The Juniper Scholarship is named after the Utah Juniper tree, which is known for its ability to grow despite harsh conditions. In naming this scholarship after the Juniper, we hope to honor survivors remarkable strength and their incredible spirits.

The Award Is Being Offered Through A Partnership With The Malouf Foundation That Focuses On Child Sexual Exploitation

Jon Anderson, provost at Southern Utah University, speaks at a press conference announcing a new scholarship at Southern Utah University for survivors of trafficking, Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2021.

Theyre calling it a scholarship for healing and justice.

On Tuesday, Southern Utah University announced the first-of-its-kind award for the state that will be specifically designated to help survivors and victims of human trafficking get a college degree.

The Juniper Scholarship will be open to applicants this month. And, so far, 43 full-ride grants have been funded by anonymous donors.

Kacie Malouf, the board chair and co-founder of the Malouf Foundation the charitable arm of a northern Utah bedding company that focuses on fighting child sexual exploitation said some survivors are trafficked by their families or lose contact with them. Then, they have no support system or financial help as they work toward recovery. That includes getting a job, finding a place to stay or pursuing higher education.

The foundation is partnering with SUU on the scholarship, and Malouf said she came up with the name based on the Utah juniper tree, which grows in the deserts around the Cedar City college.

Its ability to grow despite harsh conditions parallels the experience of many trafficking survivors, who despite being forced to endure cruel environments still found hope and freedom, she said.

Were excited about what this scholarship can do for survivors, Malouf said.

Overall, recent reports have shown alarming statistics that children who are victimized by violent crimes have one of the highest rates of ending up in a life of crime themselves. While individuals who are victims of crimes themselves usually struggle to conquer many obstacles for putting their lives back together, others who suffer the tragic loss of a parent from a crime also must deal with opportunities being violently removed from their lives. If you have beaten the odds to overcome adversity as a young victim, be sure to check out these 25 great scholarships for survivors of crime for achieving a brighter future!

Christian University Offers Full Scholarships To Human Trafficking Survivors

Human trafficking survivor tells her story

Point Loma Nazarene University wants to offer human trafficking survivors who want to earn a college degree a full-ride scholarship.

PLNU, a private Christian university located in San Diego, officially launched an Indiegogo crowd-funding campaign this week with a goal to raise $40,000 in 40 days. The money will fund the Beauty for Ashes Scholarship Fund, a reference to the Bible verse Isaiah 61:3.

San Diego is the 13th highest child prostitution area in the country, according to the FBI and PLNUs Center for Justice & Reconciliation resource website, Abolish Human Trafficking. The site also says 1.2 million children are trafficked every year, and its the second-largest source of illegal income in the world.

One of the things we are hearing over and over again is that so badly want a college education, but that just seems so completely out of the realm of possibility for them, said Kim Jones, external relations volunteer at CJR. Many of them, when theyre rescued, dont even have their high school diploma.

While being accepted into the university and receiving the scholarship is one thing, being successful throughout the four years it takes to earn a degree is another. So PLNU is developing a plan to ensure the survivors, who will remain anonymous among the student population, get the support theyll need to succeed.

The $40,000 would cover one years cost of attendance for one person, but the university hopes to be able to help more.
