Why Is Higher Education Important

While individuals used to be able to secure a decent career without any type of advanced schooling, that unfortunately is no longer the case and employees with a high school education or less are often bound to minimum wage jobs that barely pay the bills. Most lower income Americans are not in their current position because it is what they dream of doing, but rather they are stuck because of a lack of education.

While a college degree may not be the easiest to obtain, the process is definitely worth it and the lifestyle it can afford can prove to be very rewarding. The largest hurdle in the past for most prospective students has always been finding a way to finance their education, and the unfortunate truth is that many applicants were simply unable to afford the tuition and other associated costs.

With the increased number of Hispanic grants and other assistance programs, more prospective students are able to accomplish their educational goals without the accompanying financial woes.

The Importance of Tribal Colleges

Tribal colleges serve a critical role in their communities. They’re usually the only opportunity for a post-secondary education for the local population. This is due not only because of their location, but because tuition and cost of attendance is generally less than that of a typical four-year university. Additionally, there are financial aid opportunities available only to students who are members of a federally recognized Native American Indian tribe or Alaska Native group.

Tribal colleges are the primary source of teaching and preserving tribal customs and cultures. Many tribes rely on the tribal college as a means of formally teaching the history and ideas of their respective tribes. To help students afford the cost of attendance, many schools and organizations offer school specific scholarships, such as the following:

Many of the scholarships available to Asian-American and Pacific Islander students require that applicants are U.S. citizens or documented immigrants. What if you or your parents came to the United States illegally? In that case, the options for scholarships and financial aid narrow. But there are some glimmers of hope. In California, for instance, state law lets undocumented immigrants pay in-state tuition at state colleges and universities, so long as the student has attended three years of high school in California. And there are a handful of scholarships available to undocumented Asian-American students.

Changing Lives Impacting The World

Automatic Scholarship In USA | No Application Fee | Apply for financial aid

The Walton International Scholarship Program has been creating life-changing opportunities, championing faith and empowering young minds to initiate meaningful impact across Central America and Mexico for more than a quarter-century.

Walmart founder Sam Walton and his wife, Helen, launched the program with an unprecedented commitment to fund 60 student scholarships to each of three respected, faith-based Arkansas universities annually. From the beginning, the objective of the program has been to promote democracy and free enterprise in Latin America through education. Each year, rigorous screening processes are carried out in El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Belize and Mexico to identify the next class of students.

A favorite saying of Helen Walton serves as an inspiration for the program, “It’s not what you gather, but what you scatter that tells what kind of life you have lived.” The Walton International Scholarship Program sees these words carried out by Walton Scholars as part of their commitment to return to their home countries to make meaningful and lasting contributions.

Alumni have gone on to become influential leaders for the worldâs most successful corporations as well as in government, education, nonprofit and religious sectors. Each year, a new class of students enters the Walton International Scholarship Program motivated to follow in those footsteps.

Understand The Types Of Financial Aid

There are several types of financial aid available to students: grants, scholarships, fellowships, loans and work-study.

Grants, scholarships and fellowships are the most sought-after forms of financial aid because they do not need to be repaid. Depending on the source, the terms are used interchangeably, but they are not the same. Grants are usually awarded based on need. Scholarships and fellowships are typically awarded based on merit, and fellowships often have a work or service component to them.

A loan is borrowed money that must be paid back, usually with interest. Loans can come from private lenders, such as banks, and public lenders, such as the federal government. The federal government offers two types of loans for students: the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program and the Federal Perkins Loan Program. Some loan options are subsidized, which means there is no interest accruing while the student is in school and for the first six months after the student graduates.

Work-study allows students to work in part-time jobs and earn at least federal minimum wage. However, because this is a financial aid award, students may receive higher pay, depending on their particular school’s work-study funding level, when they apply for work-study and the student’s level of financial need.
