Can An Athletic Scholarship Be Taken Away

Losing an athletic scholarship is the unfortunate reality for some college student-athletes. There are a few different situations in which this might occur:

  • Most commonly, the student-athlete might never have had the scholarship to begin with. Verbal agreements are non-binding they do not guarantee you a spot on the roster or a scholarship. Even once youve signed your National Letter of Intent, your agreement might not include scholarship aid.
  • If you are injured, depending on the school you attend and whether it happened outside of games or practice, your scholarship can be pulled.
  • Coaches can decide not to renew your scholarship for the next year. This isnt a case of the scholarship being taken away since they are typically only year-long contracts, but it can still come as a surprise to some student-athletes. Non-renewals can happen for various reasons, including a new coach joining the program, getting into trouble on or off the field, poor performance, etc.
  • If you are not eligible to compete for any reasonpoor academics, not in good standing with the school, etc.a coach is not likely to keep you on scholarship.

Scholarship Limits For Most Common Mens And Womens Sports

“Eighty-five players on a football team is ridiculous,” said David Berri, an economics professor at Southern Utah University. “You only play 22 of them. You dont need four strings.”

Over the years, various college football coaches and athletics administrators have countered that 85 scholarships are necessary because of the sports injury rate and because college teams cant just add players during a season to replace those who get hurt, the way NFL teams do.

Theyve also expressed concern that, without 85 scholarships available, the quality of play would suffer, fan and commercial interest would decline and the sport would not generate the revenue that it does.

How Much Scholarship Money Can You Get

IMG Academy Announces 2022 Inaugural Women in Sports Committee ...

Fewer than 2 percent of high school student-athletes are offered athletic scholarships, but it adds up to over $2.7 billion annually for D1 and D2 alone, so theres certainly money out there. However, its important to understand that most athletic scholarships are not full rides. The amount youre offered has a lot to do with your sport and whether it is a head count or equivalency sport.

  • Head count sports are always full rides. But they only include revenue sports: for men, thats D1 basketball and D1-A football for women, its D1 basketball, tennis, volleyball and gymnastics.
  • Equivalency sports usually hand out partial scholarships. Its up to the coach to divide their scholarship money among athletes. That could mean they offer a full ride to one extremely high-level recruit , or it could mean they spread the money out among multiple athletes, which is much more common. Equivalency sports for D1 men include baseball, rifle, skiing, cross-country, track and field, soccer, fencing, swimming, golf, tennis, gymnastics, volleyball, ice hockey, water polo, lacrosse and wrestling. For D1 women, equivalency sports include bowling, lacrosse, rowing, cross-country, track and field, skiing, fencing, soccer, field hockey, softball, golf, swimming, ice hockey and water polo. All D2 and NAIA sports are equivalency sports. This article details some ways coaches decide on scholarship amounts.

Which Sports Are Good For Getting Scholarships

According to RecruitRef, lacrosse, ice hockey, and baseball are the easiest sports to get a scholarship in. This is a complicated question, however, as the sports that often have the most money for scholarships are also the most competitive. So, you might have a better shot at a partial scholarship at a more obscure sport, but if you try to earn a scholarship in a more popular sport, you could end up with a more substantial aid package even a full ride!

Ultimately, youll always have the best shot at a scholarship in the sport that you are best at and most passionate about. Sports scholarships are far from a sure thing, and if you devote yourself to a sport, you should do it because of your interest in the sport rather than a scholarship payoff. Youll be a better player, enjoy yourself more, and have a better shot of earning a scholarship if you make your choice based on your interest and abilities.

There are minimum academic standards student-athletes must meet to be considered for an academic scholarship, and these are different for every college and university. Remember, D3 schools only offer non-athletic scholarships, like academic scholarships.

Athletic Scholarships During Covid

Its clear that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on college sports. Not only have sports seasons been delayed and altered, but more than 300 sports programs across the NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA have been cut. While we need more data from college coaches and sports programs to fully analyze the effects of COVID-19 on current and future athletic scholarships, its likely that there will be at least a slight decrease in athletic scholarship availability in the near future. With that said, there are still things student-athletes can do to stay ahead of the pack and improve their chances of earning a scholarship.

Everything you need to know about scholarships during COVID-19.

Title Ix Aimed To Get Women Into Grad Schools Over 50 Years It Shaped Their Role In Sports

“Thats such an insane way of doing it,” said Berri, the SUU professor. “Youre saying, ‘I discriminated. That means I get to discriminate on scholarships, as well, because I already started off discriminating.’ Thats crazy.”

The formula would work just fine if Title IX guaranteed women adequate representation in athletic departments. But it doesn’t.

While Title IX requires schools to provide women and men “equitable” opportunities to play sports, the Department of Education offers them three ways to demonstrate they are doing so.

Proportionality meaning the percentage of participation opportunities they offer female athletes roughly equals the percentage of their undergraduate students who are women is the surest way.

The other two ways showing they are steadily moving in that direction, and showing their existing sports offerings meet their students’ abilities and interests give schools outs that allow them to continue discriminating.

A USA TODAY analysis found 87% of FBS schools did not meet the proportionality standard in 2020-21. Most, including Arkansas State, did not answer a USA TODAY survey asking if they comply with Title IX’s participation equity requirement and, if so, which of the three ways they use to comply.

The imbalance in participation opportunities creates a facade that dozens of schools give female athletes too much scholarship money. In reality, those schools simply don’t have enough female athletes.
