The number and amount of funding available varies annually. These awards are typically given to students participating in the CSD study abroad program, international student and faculty exchange programs, for international speakers/researchers to visit MSU campus or for participation in international conferences and teleconferences.

Joe T Mccrary Endowed Scholarship

The Joe T. McCrary Endowed Scholarship was established in 2005 in memory of Joe McCrary, spouse of University of Alabama Speech and Hearing Center clinical supervisor, Debra McCrary. It is given each year to the outstanding senior in communicative disorders. The recipient is chosen by the academic and clinical faculty of the Department of Communicative Disorders.

Alisa received her bachelors degree from CSUN in communication disorders and sciences and is grateful to continue in the masters program. She is thankful to the Formans for their generosity and support of graduate students like her the scholarship allows her to invest in the future and have confidence as she continues striving for her goals. After graduation, Alisa plans to work with children or adults as a Spanish-Bilingual speech language pathologist.

About the Scholarship: Ruth Lindeck Forman is a Speech Language Pathologist and Speech Communication Specialist who received her master’s degree from CSUN. She works to improve personal and cross-cultural communication and race relations through consulting, lecturing and writing. A desire to help students complete their degree programs in the department of Communication Disorders and Sciences led Ruth and her husband Lee to establish this scholarship endowment. They consider the gift a tribute to the department and to the education Ruth received at CSUN.

The Graduate Office Fellowship Funds are provided by MSU Graduate School to the department annually. CSD faculty nominate graduate students for these awards in the Fall semester. The awards are typically announced in the Spring semester. These funds are used to award students for their participation in research, for conference travel or for demonstrating excellence in academic or clinical performance. The department grants 10-15 awards annually. These awards range from $500 to $2,500.

Vincent V Suppan Scholarship

This scholarship is in honor of alumnus and faculty member Vincent V. Suppan. Vincent was born in Nazareth, PA on June 1, 1920. He received a B.S. degree in Music Education from West Chester State College in 1947 and an M.A. in Speech and Drama in 1951 from Teachers College, Columbia University. He worked as a high school teacher. As a speech clinician in a public school, Vincent joined the faculty of West Chester University State College in 1964, where he served until his retirement in 1982. The scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding undergraduate student in the Department of Communication Disorders who demonstrates outstanding service contributions through the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders local chapter of the National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association . Each recipient will receive a $1,000 scholarship applied to tuition and fees.

Lamont S Johnson Memorial Scholarship Program

In honor of his lifetime contributions spanning 29 years working as a speech-language pathologist with children with disabilities, the Lamont S. Johnson Memorial Scholarship Program provides $1,000 annual awards to African American male students who are currently enrolled full-time at Cleveland State University with a major in speech pathology. Eligible sophomores, juniors, and seniors must be U.S. citizens, have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher, demonstrate financial need, and be members of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.

Frances J Laven Scholarship

As co-owner of CAPCSD’s first management company, Frances Laven was instrumental in organizing the Council’s administrative and procedural foundations, beginning in 1989. From 2002 to 2013, Ms. Laven served as the Executive Director for CAPCSD and facilitated the growth of the Council and its many activities. As her duties continued to expand, she met her responsibilities with poise and an openness to the development of CAPCSD and its member programs. Her leadership exemplified outstanding service to both CAPCSD and the discipline of communication sciences and disorders. All who came into contact with her, particularly Board members, became enamored with personal yet professional style in handling all CAPCSD issues, big or small.

The Frances J. Laven award was initiated in 2014 when Ms. Laven retired from her position with CAPCSD. “Service” was the focus of the award to reflect her tireless efforts in forwarding the efforts of CAPCSD and the discipline.

Assistantships: Departments within the Saint Luke’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences have paid assistantships available to students for assistance with faculty research, administrative tasks, departmental initiatives, or teaching assistance.

Paid Work Study: Undergraduate and Graduate students can qualify for work study funds and assist with faculty research, administrative tasks, departmental initiatives, or as a TA.

Administered by the Scottish Rite Foundation of Colorado in memory of a former Sovereign Grand Inspector General, the Dwight A. Hamilton Scholarship in Speech-Language Pathology is granted annually for $5,000 to four graduate speech-language pathology students at the University of Colorado Boulder or the University of Northern Colorado.
