Crafting a Successful GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Application (Part 1 of 3)

The ALA offers a variety of scholarships to students pursuing their masters degrees in library science. Students can apply for general scholarships or scholarships in special areas of study. Minority students are also encouraged to apply for one of the ALAs diversity initiative scholarships.

The ALA Scholarship portion of the ALA website provides information on the various scholarships and grants available. Note that you must be attending or planning to attend an ALA-approved program in order to be eligible for these awards.

Application Requirements & Deadline:

  • Complete an online application, including a personal statement.
  • Assure that you have three professors or employers who are willing to fill out the required online reference form.
  • Have copies of official transcripts sent from the institution which awarded your bachelors degree, and any other college or university you may have attended.
  • In general, applications are due by March 1st.
  • Recipients of these awards will receive a phone call about their scholarship after June 1st. Other applicants will receive an email after July 1st.

Society Of American Archivists Scholarships

The Society of American Archivists offers three scholarships for students interested in pursuing careers in archives, in addition to hosting the ARL/SAA Mosaic Program . The Southern California Chapter of the Special Libraries Association is accepting applications for the Karen Sternheim Memorial Scholarship. This annual scholarship is designed to assist a master’s degree student in an ALA-accredited library and information studies program planning for a career in special librarianship. The recipient must be a permanent resident of California or Nevada. However, there is no geographic restriction on the school in which the student is enrolled. The amount of the scholarship this year is $3,000.

Williena Burdine Broyles Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in 2004 by Marvin Burdine to honor his sister Williena, a librarian in the Somerset, Kentucky school system for 25 years. To be eligible for the award students must be from one of Kentucky’s Appalachian counties , demonstrate financial need as determined by the Office of Financial Need and be a major in Library Science.

John Thomas Durham Graduate Student Fund was established by Henry Durham to honor his son Thomas, a graduate of the School of Library and Information Science. Graduate student expenses may be partially or totally supported with the income from the Fund. Given by the American Indian Library Association, it is for American Indian/Alaskan Native students who are enrolled in or have been accepted to and will enroll in a master’s degree program in an American Library Association-accredited library school. One scholarship will be awarded in June for the coming academic year. Applications will be accepted beginning in November.

Taher And Myra Razik International Fellowship

The Taher and Myra Razik International Fellowship at the Graduate School of Education of the State University of New York/University at Buffalo in the USA, is funded by private donations from the late Professor Emeritus Taher A. Razik and his wife, Myra Razik, with additional support from UB and GSE.

The Razik Fellowship is competitive and selective. There is one fellowship awarded every four years. We are currently accepting applications for the 202021 academic year. The candidate selected can commence his/her studies in either the beginning of the fall 2020 semester or the beginning of the spring 2021 semester .

In order to qualify for the fellowship, a candidate must be a junior faculty member at a college of education in Egypt. The fellow selected with the agreement of his/her college, takes official leave for up to four years of study in the United States at UB in the GSE Department of Educational Leadership and Policy to earn a PhD degree. After completing the doctorate, the fellow returns to Egypt, either to rejoin the faculty at his/her college of education or to assume a different leadership position in education.
