Many public and private institutions have initiated their own grant and scholarship programs. Students can apply directly through the schools admissions and financial aid office. Some examples are given below.

Catawba College offers one of the most prestigious scholarship programs for First Generation college students. These scholarships are awarded based on the result of essay competition. All of these grants and scholarships are merit-based, but special consideration is given to those who have income limitations.

The Culinary Institute of America offers the First Inner City Scholarship at several of its campuses. This program is designed for students wishing to pursue a career in the food preparation business. The scholarship heavily promotes its focus on First Generation students. Whats The Difference Between Scholarships Grants And Student Loans

College students get financial help to pay for college in various ways. In addition to scholarships, many turn to grants and loans. So whats the difference between these forms of financial support? Lets consider each to best understand what they have in common and how they differ.

Scholarships

Scholarships are sums of money given to students to cover the costs of college. Some scholarships stipulate that students can only use them to pay tuition. Other scholarships allow students to use them to cover expenses such as:

  • Transportation to and from school

Students do not need to pay back scholarships. However, to receive them, students typically need to meet certain criteria, which may include:

  • Race or ethnicity

Grants

Like scholarships, students do not need to repay grants, which are sums of money distributed to cover college expenses. The federal government, states, and universities provide grants to students based on financial need. Businesses and associations may also award grants to students in need.

Sometimes students get confused about the difference between grants and scholarships. After all, both provide students with money they dont need to repay. The factor that separates the two is that grants are awarded based solely on financial need and cost of schooling, whereas scholarship awards are usually based on a number of factors such as financial need, grades, and extracurricular activities.

The First Generation Matching Grant Program

Bridging The Dream Scholarship | Student Loans | Sallie Mae®

The First Generation Matching Grant Program was started by the State of Florida to provide financial help to first generation college students. The grant is need based and ear marked for undergraduate students.

Unlike a traditional grant, the FGMG does not provide primary funds. Instead, it matches money gathered from private sources. For example, any money donated by your parents or grandparents, small scholarships from private institutions or money earned from a part time job will be matched, dollar for dollar, by FGMG. Public sources of funds like financial aid from your college or university or Federal student loans will not be matched

Eligibility:

To Apply:

All Applications for FGMG must be made through the financial aid office of the Florida school you are currently enrolled in. The agents at the financial aid office will help you to determine your eligibility for the program, complete your FAFSA within the deadline and submit your application. If awarded the grant, the amount of the award will be decided by your educational institution based on your need and the amount of other grants, loans and scholarships.
