Zell Miller does not acknowledge the weight assigned to a specific course. It calculates your average scores for all courses without weighing them. The Zell Miller scholarship program aims to award highly-eligible students. It does not consider weighted GPA. The weighted GPA is assigned by high schools as honors and gifts. Zell Miller wants to assess and evaluate students eligibility according to a merit-based system. A student with an added GPA may get an accidental edge. So, Zell Miller decided to exclude weighted GPA from the eligibility requirement. however, Zell Miller Weighted is diffrent in this case.

Courses Excluded From The Zell Miller Calculations

  • Audited / CO-OP courses are not included in the Zell Miller attempted hours or Zell Miller GPA.

  • Learning Support courses are not included in the Zell Miller attempted hours or Zell Miller GPA.

  • AP, IB, and CLEP courses are not included in the Zell Miller attempted hours or Zell Miller GPA.

  • Courses dropped during the Drop / Add period are not included in the Zell Miller attempted hours or Zell Miller GPA because they are erased from student records.

  • Courses withdrawn due to serious medical issues may be forgiven and exempt from consideration in the Zell Miller calculations. An appeal must be sent to the Georgia Student Finance Commission.

  • Courses withdrawn due to military activation are forgiven and are not included in the Zell Miller calculations.

Georgia residents have an opportunity to earn merit-based college funding through the HOPE and Zell Miller Scholarship Programs. Created in 1993, these programs were designed to assist with tuition costs at eligible post-secondary schools across the state. The amount a student receives depends on the institution in question.

To qualify for both of these prestigious awards, students need to show a certain level of academic achievement. Currently, HOPE recipients receive $5,000 for their first year of school and $2,500 for their second year. Zell Miller awards generally cover the standard undergraduate tuition cost, but may vary based on the school type and specific enrollment hours.

Hope Scholarship General Information

The HOPE Scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students who are residents of Georgia, maintain a 3.0 HOPE GPA, and meet UWG’s academic progress rules. For the High School Graduating Class of 2017 and beyond, a student meeting the requirements to be a HOPE/Zell Miller Scholar at the time of high school graduation must earn a minimum of four full credits from the academic rigor course categories prior to graduating from high school. A student that did not graduate high school as eligible for the HOPE Scholarship can gain eligibility at specified checkpoints. The HOPE Scholarship program has attempted and paid hour maximums of 127 hours.

HOPE or Zell Miller Scholarship

To apply for the HOPE or Zell Miller Scholarship, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or the GSFapps. Additionally, a HOPE Scholarship Request Form must be submitted if a student is not a current recipient or transferring from an out of state institution. Graduating high school seniors do not need to submit a request form. The Georgia Student Finance Commission reports eligible students as their final academic status is determined. Students should notify our office after July 15th if they believe they are eligible but have not yet been awarded.

Students can track their eligibility by logging onto the My GAfutures tab at gafutures.org. Recent high school graduates should select the “My High School HOPE GPA” link. Current undergraduates should select the “My College HOPE Profile” link.

*Note: The FAFSA is valid for Fall, Spring & Summer semesters of that academic year. It must be completed each year for consideration. Students who are admitted starting summer semester must complete two FAFSAs. For example, for Summer 2019, students should complete the 2018-2019 & 2019-2020 FAFSAs.

Dual Enrollment

To apply for Dual Enrollment, students must complete the application on the Georgia Student Finance Commission website and submit it to their high school. The high school will certify the application and send the student’s information to Augusta University.

Who Is Zell Miller

Zell Miller is an American politician who served as the 73rd Governor of Georgia from 1991 to 1999 and as the U.S. Senator from 2000 to 2005.

Zell Miller is a well-known philanthropist, who has donated his time and resources to help children with disabilities, veterans and their families, and those in need. He also established a scholarship program for high school graduates called Zell Miller Scholarship Program that offers $10,000 per year for four years of college or university education.

Financial Aid: Zell Miller Scholarship Program

Zell Miller is a merit-based scholarship program available to students who have met the University System of Georgia and the Georgia Student Finance Commission residency requirements and are enrolled in an undergraduate degree seeking program.

The Zell Miller Scholarship was created in March of 2011 for Georgias highest performing students. Students are determined initially to be eligible for the Zell Miller Scholarship by the Georgia Student Finance Commission . Students can check their status for the Zell Miller Scholarship by checking their HOPE GPA. Students will only be awarded the Zell Miller Scholarship after KSU receives confirmation of their status from GSFC.

Apply For The Georgia Hope Scholarship

  • Complete the current-year FAFSA each year you want to be considered for federal and state aid.
  • If you wish to receive the HOPE scholarship only, complete the state application and submit the Georgia Hope Scholarship/GTEG Supplemental Residency Form to the Financial Aid Office. Once these documents are approved, they will satisfy the application requirements for state aid as long as you attend Emory.
    • Students who were not eligible for the HOPE Scholarship as an entering first-year student may become eligible when they have earned a minimum of 30 credit hours with a 3.0 or better grade point average.
    • Students who currently are eligible for and receive the HOPE Scholarship at another Georgia institution may continue to receive the HOPE Scholarship at Emory for up to 127 attempted hours maximum. To retain eligibility at Emory, students must enroll at least half-time and maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA.

    FREE COLLEGE – GEORGIA: The Georgia HOPE and Zell Miller Scholarships!

    The Zell Miller Scholarship program is a need-based scholarship that offers full tuition coverage to in-state students with a 3.0 GPA and a 19 ACT score or higher. The scholarship covers the cost of tuition, room, board, books, and fees for up to four years.

    Residency for the HOPE and Zell Miller Scholarships

    To meet residency requirements for the HOPE and Zell Miller Scholarships, you must be a resident of Georgia at the time of high school graduation. Students who are not Georgia residents when they graduate high school will not meet residency requirements for the HOPE and Zell Miller Scholarships until 24 months after they establish domicile in Georgia. If that date falls after the start of a semester, the student will not meet residency requirements for the scholarships until the following semester.

  • Earn a qualifying test score on a single national or state/district administration of the ACT or single national administration of the SAT prior to high school graduation.

    A minimum composite score of 26 is required for the ACT.

    A minimum score of 1200 is required for the SAT.

    About The Zell Miller Scholarship

    The Zell Miller Scholarship is a performance-based scholarship program available to students who have met the requirements of the Georgia University System and the GSFC residence and are studying for an undergraduate course under the Zell Miller Scholarship.

    Georgias Zell Miller Scholarship is open to Georgian residents who have demonstrated academic success. The scholarship provides funds to help students withstand the education costs associated with attending a Zell Miller Scholarship eligible college in Georgia.

    Eligibility Requirements For Zell Millers Scholarships

    Overall, scholarships and colleges require GPAs higher than 3.0 or 3.5. Zell Miller is different in that case. It only grants scholarships to top-performing students. Students with GPAs higher than 3.7. Also, It does not entertain weighted GPA policies.

    • SAT or ACT qualified:

    The Zell Miller scholarship requires a minimum of 1200 scores for SAT examination. For ACT, scholarship eligibility requires a minimum of 26 composite scores.

    Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationally Grant

    HOPE stands for Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationally and is a state-funded program awarded to Georgia residents enrolled in a certificate or diploma program. The grant pays for 76% of the tuition costs up to 63 attempted semester hours. The 76% that HOPE covers is toward tuition costs only and does not include the $331 of fees.

    Retroactive Payment For Home School Students

    The request for retroactive payment for home school students must be made before the last day of the term following the term in which 30 semester hours were attempted.     Public Colleges Universities And Technical Colleges

    Students planning to attend a public college, university, or technical college have two options for applying for the HOPE Scholarship.

    • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid : By using a GAcollege411 account and accessing the FAFSA application from GAcollege411, applicants can reduce the amount of time it takes to complete this form.
    • Or one can apply for the HOPE Scholarship by: electronic application, or printable paper application.

    Georgia Zell Miller Scholarship

    Local college students credit former Gov. Zell Miller for their education

    Entering first-year students who are Georgia residents may qualify for the Zell Miller Scholarship if they graduated from an eligible high school with a 3.7 or higher grade point average and received a minimum score of 1200 on the SAT or 26 on ACT. Entering first-year students who are Georgia residents also may qualify for the Zell Miller Scholarship if they graduated from an eligible high school as the class valedictorian or salutatorian.

    GPA calculations are based upon letter grades only, and plus/minus values are ignored. Zell Miller Scholarships are not based on need, but will reduce any other full tuition scholarships you receive. Zell Miller Scholarship regulations are updated annually and may change.

    The annual scholarship amount is determined by state appropriations. For fall 2021 and spring 2022, students attending Emory University will receive the following: Full-time students: $5616 fall/spring Half-time students: $1,404 per semester.

    An eligible high school or an accredited home study program is one which is accredited by at least one of the approved accrediting agencies listed below this is true even if the high school or home study program is located outside the state of Georgia or outside of the United States.

    A high school not accredited by one of the approved accrediting agencies as listed below is considered an ineligible high school.

    A home study program which is not accredited by one of the approved accrediting agencies as listed below is considered an unaccredited home study program.

    Common Myths About Hope And Zell Miller Scholarships Video Transcript

    Hello and welcome to common myths about HOPE and Zell Miller Scholarships. I need to be in 12 hours to get HOPE or Zell Miller Scholarship. Hope and Zell Miller Scholarships pay on a per credit hour basis so even if you take one credit hour you will receive the equivalent of one hour of HOPE or Zell Miller. My GPA is below the eligibility requirement so I guess I lose my HOPE or Zell Miller Scholarship for next semester. Not necessarily. We review eligibility at the end of the semester only if you are at a checkpoint. Checkpoints are 30, 60, and 90 attempted hours and the end of every spring semester. If I do not go in spring I will not lose my HOPE or Zell Miller Scholarship. That’s not correct because students are checked for continuing HOPE or Zell Miller Scholarship eligibility at the end of every spring semester regardless if they were enrolled for spring or not. I made a bad grade in a class so I’m going to retake it to get a better grade so I don’t lose my HOPE or Zell Miller Scholarship. While UNG allows you to retake a class and count the second grade towards your overall GPA HOPE and Zell Miller Scholarships require all classes to be counted in their GPA calculation.

    Length Of Scholarship Limits

    The length of your Zell Miller Scholarship award depends on the following:

    • Attempted-Hours Limit Scholarship eligibility ends when a student attempts 127 credit hours, even if Zell Miller funds did not pay for those credits. There are no exceptions covering extra hours needed for majors requiring additional hours, for dual-degree programs, or for second majors.

    • Combined-Paid Hours Limit Scholarship eligibility ends when a student receives 127 credits of payment from any combination of the HOPE Scholarship, Zell Miller Scholarship, and HOPE Grant.

    • Seven Year Limit A student who received their Zell Miller payment between the Summer 2011 and Spring 2019 terms and meets all other eligibility requirements may receive the Zell Miller Scholarship until June 30 following the completion of the seventh full year after high school graduation, home study completion, or successful GED test. A student that served on active duty in the military following their date of high school graduation, or equivalent, may request that such active duty service time be added back to their seven years of eligibility.

    • Ten Year Limit Zell eligibility may end 10 years from the date of high school graduation for students who received theirâ¯FIRSTâ¯Zell payment Summer 2019 term or later.
