Seattle Central’s Kaiser Permanente Medical Assisting Scholars

Can you afford to go to PA school? The question you should be asking is: can I afford not to go to PA school?

If your goal is to become a PA, then the answer to this question is easy. The worst thing you can do is shy away from applying because you think you wont be able to afford it, and then live the rest of your life wondering, What if?

When I applied to the Rutgers Physician Assistant Program and spoke with students at the open house, they explained that if I were to be accepted the program would do its best to ensure I got through financially. They were right.

I may have borrowed a little more than I intended, but the money was available and after an initial setback I ended up with a highly coveted NHSC Scholarship.

As you will soon find out, there are plenty of opportunities for loans, grants, scholarships, etc. It does, however, take a little work on your part. But since you have set your goals and youre focused, you are prepared for anything.

Congratulations To Our 2019 Student Scholarship Winner Katie Lukovich Pa

Katie’s Narrative…“I can still remember the warmth of the bright spotlights, the sounds of the patients heart beat on the monitor, the smells of antiseptic and the cool brisk air of the operating room from the very first surgery I ever witnessed. It was a routine laparoscopic cholecystectomy, but to me, it was anything but routine. It was that moment, that surgery, where I knew the operating room was where I belong.

The first time I saw an exposed spinal cord was during my first laminectomy procedure. I was in awe of the delicate yet resilient anatomy. As a Certified Surgical First assistant of several years, I have assisted and excelled in several surgical procedures in all areas of surgery. My passion for the detailed complexity of neurosurgery always drew me back into the neurosurgical operating rooms. Whether it was performing emergency burr holes on a patient with a subdural hematoma at three in the morning, or assisting on a 14 hour spinal fusion revision, I just couldnt get enough. As a first assistant, I never had the privilege of caring for the patient preoperatively nor witnessing the curative therapy a surgical procedure can have postoperatively on a patient. As a neurosurgical physician assistant, I will be able to encompass my patients care throughout the entire surgical experience.

There’s a rush on to pay for educating student PAs from government coffers, because many states are already experiencing dire shortages of healthcare workers. Expansion of the Medicaid government health care rolls is bringing many disadvantaged Americans into participating facilities. All those people require low-cost care, to preserve state budgets, so hospital administrators are searching for creative ways to provide more treatment with less money.

And that’s where PAs enter the picture, because they work under the direction of physicians in delivering primary care. Their function is to multiply the treatment one doctor can give a number of patients, and that is a very valuable role. In areas with a severe dearth of doctors, PAs are expected to work independently during much of the day. Surgical PAs may even assist during operations, which tells you how much responsibility they are given.
