UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. Though summer is right around the corner, its not too late for students to register for summer courses. Summer Session 2022 will provide an opportunity for students to catch up or get ahead in their degree programs.

Summer Session is a great time for students to take courses that did not fit into their schedules during the regular academic year or to retake a course that did not go as planned, said Kelly Griffith, director of the Office for Summer Session. Alternately, students can get ahead in their degree programs or make progress toward a minor or certificate. Whatever students goals, taking courses in summer can help them hit the ground running in fall.

Students can choose from thousands of summer courses, offered in a variety of delivery modes, across 24 Penn State campuses. As in past summers, students from any campus have the option to take courses at any other campus, including Penn State World Campus.

If cost presents a barrier to summer study, the Summer Success Scholarship can help. Students from any campus are eligible for the scholarship if they require at least one summer course to graduate on time and have financial need. Students can learn more and apply at summer.psu.edu/scholarship. The deadline to apply is April 22.

Open Doors Scholarship Program

Penn State has a long history and a proud tradition of opening the door to higher education for students from every economic background. Our University was founded to serve the children of farmers and laborers, and as the Commonwealth of Pennsylvanias land-grant institution, we remain committed to access and affordability. Rising costs and declining state support for higher education have resulted in tuition increases across the nation, and the burden has been especially hard to bear for those studentsundergraduates who are among the first in their families to attend college or who come from low-income households and underrepresented populationsfor whom a Penn State degree represents the greatest opportunity to change their economic destiny. Ultimately, only 50 percent of students from the poorest households graduate within six years.

To address the financial, academic, and personal challenges that our undergraduates face in earning their degrees, the University has created a range of programs that can help them to succeed. Alumni and friends can help to sustain these programs and meet the urgent needs of students through their endowed gifts.

Student Transitional Experiences Program :

Designed to help undergraduates who will be completing their degrees at University Park after spending their first two years at one of Penn States other campuses, STEP offers a combination of scholarship support, special courses, mentoring, and other opportunities for students to become immediately engaged in their new academic community.

The college emergency funding is intended to provide short-term financial assistance to students who are managing demanding academic requirements while struggling with unforeseen debilitating financial circumstances. The emergency funding will be provided in the form of one-time award and is not intended to provide ongoing relief for recurring expenses. Further, these awards are not loans that students are expected to repay. Every request for emergency funding will be reviewed on its individual merits and the value of the awards would range in response to the specific needs of the student but typically will not exceed $500.

Those who successfully complete the first session can return for a second summer.

The Open Doors Programs

For many students, the greatest tuition increase of all becomes the need to extend their education over five years or more, as they balance full-time jobs with full-time course loads, struggle to make the transition to Penn State and between our campuses, and try to find their place in our academic community. The following programs have been designed to keep students on track to their degrees. The Open Doors Matching Program is designed to create scholarships that support all of the programs. Donors may restrict their scholarship to a specific college or campus and indicate a preference for one of the programs. In awarding scholarships, the University will give priority to students with the highest level of financial needpresently defined as those whose families can cover only 25 percent or less of their educational costs.
