The Bernard Osher Foundation awarded Fresno State with $500,000 to establish a scholarship endowment benefiting students transferring to Fresno State from a California community college. Each year in perpetuity the endowment is expected to fund 10, $2,500 scholarships. The first will be available for the 2013-14 academic year to junior and senior Fresno State transfer students who have demonstrated a financial need and shown academic promise in high school and community college.

Headquartered in San Francisco, the Osher Foundation provides post-secondary scholarship funding to universities across the nation, with special attention on reentry students. Founded in 1977 by businessman Bernard Osher, the foundation seeks to improve quality of life through support for higher education and the arts.

Grossmont College Osher Scholarship

Thanks to the generosity of The Bernard Osher Foundation, thousands of California Community College students like you may receive an Osher Scholarship as part of the California Community Colleges Scholarship Endowment. Mr. Oshers vision is to not only benefit the community college students of today but countless more for years to come.

The Grossmont Osher Scholarship is offered every Fall and Spring semester. Grossmont College awards approximately $56,000 scholarship funds a year.

General Criteria

  • Student must have completed 24 or more degree applicable semester units at the time of the initial scholarship disbursement.

  • Student must be enrolled at Grossmont College least half-time during all terms in which the award remains active.

  • Student must have financial need.

  • Student must have received a Board of Governors Fee Waiver at the time of application and also at the time of award disbursement.

Amount of award: Annual Awards up to $1,200 . Awards are also based upon a minimum of six units of enrollment or higher per term.

Mr. Oshers vision is to not only benefit the community college students of today but countless more for years to come.

To qualify for this Scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:-Must have completed 24 or more degree applicable semester units at the time of the initial scholarship disbursement.-Must be enrolled at least half-time during all semesters in which the award remains active.-Must have received a CCC Board of Governors Fee Waiver.

Awards will be adjusted based on enrolled status and determined as follows:-Full-time = up to $650/semester-Three-quarter-time = up to $487.50/semester-Half-time = up to $325/semester

Amount of Award: Annual Awards up to $1,300 each and will be pro-rated based on enrollment.

This scholarship is a renewable scholarship and students who are awarded, are eligible for two additional consecutive years , upon successful completion of coursework, and application submission, each year funding is requested.

To Be Eligible For Scholarship Consideration Students Must Meet All Of The Following Criteria:

  • Be an applicant to the Cal Maritime
  • Submit the online admission application to Cal Maritime by November 30th of the year preceding the year you enter.
  • Be a student transferring in at least 60 transferrable semester units completed by the spring semester before enrolling as a student whose last college was a California Community College

Each college administers its scholarship program and offers support for outside agency scholarships. Thousands of easy-to-find scholarships are available. You might receive aid if youre a member of a particular church, have connections to a certain company, or are pursuing a specific career path.

To Be Selected To Receive The Scholarship Scholarship Applicants Must Also Meet The Following Criteria:

  • Be selected by the Osher Scholarship Selection Committee
  • Be admitted to the Cal Maritime
  • Be enrolled as a full-time student at the California Maritime Academy
  • Maintain at least a 2.25 in the first year at Cal Maritime and at least a 2.50 cumulative GPA in all remaining years at Cal Maritime
  • Not be enrolled beyond the student’s eighth semester at Cal Maritime
  • Apply for the scholarship through the financial aid online software from November 23, 2022 to January 23, 2023. Click here.

California Maritime Academy’s Vice President for University Advancement is the point of contact for all scholarship applicants. The selection process will be coordinated through the Osher Foundation Scholarship Committee.

Scholarship awardees will be notified by April 1. In the event the scholarship winner chooses not to attend Cal Maritime, a new awardee will be selected from the remaining finalists and notified as soon as possible.

About the Scholarship

Three years ago, the Bernard Osher Foundation gave the Foundation for California Community Colleges a gift of $25 million to begin a scholarship fund for community college students. According to a press release on the Foundation for California Community Colleges website, the Bernard Osher Foundation was founded in 1977 by Bernard Osher, as a means of supporting higher education and the arts. In addition to the initial gift, the foundation also promised to match funds raised by the colleges themselves.
