OU President: National Merit Program Makes Oklahoma Education ‘So Much More’

On April 18,2020 OHIOs Ebony Bobcat Network surpassed its $300,000 fundraising goal, endowing its Urban Scholarship Fund in perpetuity and reaching a significant milestone for an alumni group whose roots lie in OHIOs Urban Scholars Program.

The EBN Urban Scholarship Fund will provide life-changing tuition assistance to students accepted into OHIOs Urban Scholars Program, which provides scholarships and professional development support to high-achieving students from urban school districts across Ohio.

Ohio University President Emeritus Roderick J. McDavis, BSED 70, OHIOs first black president, announced the Urban Scholars Program at his inauguration in September 2004. Launched that semester, the program was tied directly to his goal of increasing campus diversity, an initiative that continued to be embraced by McDavis successor, M. Duane Nellis, whose Strategic Pathways to Ohio Universitys Future include becoming a national leader for diversity and inclusion.

The EBN formed in the spring of 2010 after some of OHIOs black alumni met with President McDavis during the Black Alumni Reunion and he called on the graduates to support the Urban Scholars Program with their time, talent and treasure.

Bachelors Plus students are pursuing a license rather than an additional degree. MI Student Aid

The total cost of getting around in college can really vary. Will you take a subway, car or an airplane to get to school? Is on-campus parking free, or will you need to budget for parking? Is the campus walkable? Do you own a car, or are you planning to use public transportation? All of these questions can make a big difference in your transportation budget. At Ohio University, freshman are not allowed to park on campus.

The location of a college or university can also have a big effect on the amount you’ll have to spend just to get around. Small, rural schools may be easier to get around, but the cost of getting to campus may be higher. On the flip side, transportation in a city is sometimes costly, but there may be more buses, trains or affordable flights to actually get to school.
