The Chinese American Library Association Scholarships

Giving Month: Scholarships and Fellowships for Underrepresented Minorities in Regulatory Science

The CALA offers several scholarships to qualified students who are studying for advanced degrees in library sciences every year. These awards are reserved for full-time students who are of Chinese heritage and who have shown commitment to the library sciences field.

Application Requirements & Deadline:

  • Students must be of Chinese descent and must be accepted to, or attending, an ALA-accredited masters program.
  • You must submit a CV and personal statement.
  • You must submit an official transcript from your current or most recent academic institution.
  • You will need to have three references submit letters through an online system.
  • Applications are generally due at the end of March.
  • Recipients are notified of their awards towards the end of May.

Process Of Award Consideration

  • Students apply to an eligible program by the application deadline. Most programs have December 1 or January 1 deadlines. Please check the program page for specific information.
  • Around 6-8 weeks following the deadline, students who are academically admissible receive admission letters. This is typically around early February.
  • 1-2 weeks later, first round funding offers are communicated to students. This is around mid-February. If you do not receive a funding offer, and were admitted academically, you are in consideration for any funding offer that becomes available.
  • In most cases, students are given until April 15 to accept or decline their funding offer. As these decisions are made, subsequent students are communicated with regarding any new funding that may become available.
  • Throughout this process, any program-specific or faculty-grant specific funding offers may be communicated to students as well. These are typically awarded outside of this process, in consultation with program faculty. If additional information is needed from a student, they will be contacted directly.

The Library Of Congress Fellowship Programs

The Library of Congress offers a wealth of fellowship and internship programs to qualified students. These programs are available at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Some individuals may wish to complete a post-doctoral fellowship with the LOC as an important part of their career development path.

Christian Larew Memorial Scholarship

Award Amount: $3,000

Application Deadline: March 1st

Within the Library and Information Technology Association of the ALA, this scholarship is granted each year to students enrolled in a program in ALA-accredited Master of Library Science in America who plan to follow a career in the library technology field.

There must be a demonstration of the potential for leadership by eligible students. They are to have not earned more than 12 graduate credits, exhibit economic need yet to be met, possess experience in library work, and maintain excellence in academics.

The Society Of American Archivists Josephine Forman Scholarship

One of three scholarships offered by the SAA, this awarded is targeted towards minority students who are working for degrees in library sciences with a special focus on archival management. One recipient is awarded $10,000 through this program every year. The Josephine Forman Scholarship is only offered to students whose academic programs have at least three SAA approved archival science courses.

  • Applicants must be US Citizens or permanent residents.
  • All applicants must be from a minority group, as defined by the US Census Bureau.

The American Indian Library Association Library School Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded annually to one American Indian student who has been accepted into a graduate program in library sciences. The program must be accredited by the American Library Association. The AILA Library School Scholarship provides an excellent opportunity for Native American students who are pursuing their education in this field.

Application Requirements & Deadline:

  • You must be a member of a federally recognized tribe or must hold an identification card from a recognized tribe.
  • You will need to demonstrate commitment to American Indian communities and American Indian initiatives.

Jewell Gardiner Memorial Scholarship

The School of Sciences, Mathematics and Public Health

Deadline: August 1st and November 1st

This scholarship is provided each semester by the California School Library Association which provides this scholarship for $1,000 outstanding graduate students who are presently enrolled in a masters program for library science that leads to the Teacher Librarian Credential.

Eligible applicants are mandated to be current members of the CSLA Northern Region, be residing within California, attend an ALA-accredited library school, be willing to serve as active volunteers for a minimum of one committee, and possess prior experience in teaching.

The Library & Information Technology Association Scholarships

LITA is a branch of the American Library Association that focuses on the use of high-tech systems and applications in libraries. They offer several scholarships which award qualified students financial support. A general scholarship and two scholarships for minority students are offered every year. Please note that you will need to follow the ALA Scholarship Program application requirements in order to qualify for these awards.

Application Requirements & Deadline:

  • Complete an online application, including a personal statement.
  • Assure that you have three professors or employers who are willing to fill out the required online reference form.

The Society Of American Archivists Mosaic Scholarship

The Mosaic Scholarship is one of three awards offered by the SAA for outstanding graduate students in the field of library sciences. The Mosaic Scholarship is awarded to a minority student who has completed no more than half of the credits required in their masters degree program.

Up to two scholarships are awarded through this program annually. Candidates should demonstrate commitment to their field and must be attending a school which offers at least three approved archival sciences courses.

The AJL Scholarship is awarded only to students who are attending ALA approved programs.

This scholarship is sponsored by the ALAs Association for Library Service to Children . It is presented annually for $6,000 to two outstanding men and women who have the intention of earning a Master of Library Science degree to work in librarianship of children to serve youth up to age 14.

The basis on which recipients will be chosen is on their leadership qualities, academic achievement, previous library work experience, citizenship, personal qualifications, and commitment to working with children in any kind of library.

Alaska Library Association Scholarship

The stated purpose is to provide financial assistance to worthy students pursuing graduate studies leading to a Masters Degree in Library and Information Studies and to encourage graduates to return to Alaska to work in professional library positions.   • ALA Spectrum Scholarship – annually provides up to 60 students from racial and ethnic underrepresented groups with a $5,000 tuition scholarship and $1,500 in professional development funds as they pursue a master’s degree in library and information science.
