Lee University recently awarded scholarships to 48 women for the 2021-22 school year. The Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation, a Georgia nonprofit organization that is dedicated to the education of female students, funded the scholarships.

Scholarships were awarded to female students who reside in one of nine specified southeastern states. Recipients were chosen based on a combination of factors including financial need, academic merit, and character.

I am so incredibly honored I was given the opportunity to receive the Lettie Pate Whitehead scholarship, said Jocelynn Bonilla, scholarship recipient. I am the youngest of four kids who currently all attend Lee. College is necessity but also a privilege in my family, so this scholarship provides me an opportunity to study without an overwhelming financial burden on my parents and helps me be the student I know I can be.

Mrs. Lettie Pate Whitehead, for whom the foundation is named, was born in Virginia in 1872. In 1895, she married Joseph Brown Whitehead, and the two settled in Chattanooga. In 1899, Mr. Whitehead and an associate approached The Coca-Cola Company with the idea of bottling the popular beverage. The two businessmen secede a contract and soon began bottling and selling Coca-Cola throughout the United States.

A reception took place last month to honor the newest Lettie Pate Whitehead Scholars.

The Touch Of Goodness

History has provided us with no shortage of incredible women. Some have broken barriers in business. Others have spurred change in their communities. And others have stood boldly in the face of adversity. Lettie Pate Whitehead, as it happens, did all three.

Born in 1872, Lettie Pate grew up in rural Thaxton, Virginia. Living among elderly female family members who lacked formal education and financial means, she noted the struggles they endured as a result. In 1894, Lettie married Joseph Brown Whitehead, an attorney and entrepreneur, and the couple settled in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where they had two sons. By the early 1900s, Mr. Whitehead had found success in bottling a popular fountain drink called Coca-Cola, and he and Lettie relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, to further the venture.

Tragedy struck in 1906, however, and Mr. Whitehead died of pneumonia, leaving Mrs. Whitehead to run the business herself. Under her leadership, the company would achieve great success. By 1934, Whitehead became the first woman in the U.S. to sit on the board of a major corporation, having been appointed to the Coca-Cola Companys board of directors.

The 1930s and 1940s brought new challenges. In the span of five years, both of Whiteheads adult sons died. Devastated by loss, she devoted herself to faith and philanthropy, giving generously to many charities throughout Georgia and Virginia until her death in 1953.
