JACKSON, Mississippi This fall, Jackson State University will make access to a higher education a little easier for 2,000 first-time-in-college freshmen through the new Tiger Ready Scholarship. The one-time award of up to $1,000 will be given to incoming students who have not received other scholarships to defray the cost of tuition.

These scholarships were created for underrepresented students at Jackson State Community College. Current categories are English Language Learners, students age 25 and older, African Americans, Asian Americans, American Indians and LatinX students, as well as persons who are in a nontraditional major based on their gender, such as men in nursing or women in engineering. The college applies to the Tennessee Board of Regents each year for continued funding, which is administered by the college’s Diversity Committee.
