Basis For Receiving Pell Grants

The maximum Pell grant amount for the 2017-2018 school year was $5,920, but most students receive smaller amounts.

If you are eligible for a Pell grant, your grant amount is based on the following criteria:
  • Your financial need
  • Your schools cost of attendance
  • Whether you are a full-time or part-time student
  • Whether you plan to enroll for a full academic year or less

Your financial need is based solely on the results of your Free Application for Federal Student Aid . You do not need to complete any additional applications for Pell grants.

To determine need, the FAFSA looks at the following:
  • Your assets, if youre independent
  • Your parents incomes and assets if youre dependent
  • Your familys household size
  • The number of family members currently attending college

If your school plans to award you a Pell Grant, it will notify you in writing to tell you how much youll receive, as well as how and when you can expect to receive it. Your school will send funds to you at least once per semester, trimester or quarter. It likely will credit your school account first and then send any extra money to you for other expenses.

Type Of Federal Student Aid

Graduate or professional students may be eligible to receive aid from the following federal student aid programs:

  • Federal Pell Grant- A Pell Grant, unlike a loan, does not have to be repaid. You may be eligible to receive one if you are enrolled in a postbaccalaureate teacher certification program. Amounts can change yearly.
  • Federal Work-Study Program – The FWS Program provides part-time jobs for undergraduate and graduate students with financial need. This program allows you to earn money to help pay education expenses and encourages community service work and work related to your course of study.
  • The William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program – This is the largest federal student loan program. Under this program, the college is your lender rather than a bank or other financial institution. There are two types of Direct Loans that graduate or professional students enrolled in a program leading to a degree or certificate may receive:
  • Direct Unsubsidized LoansEligible students may borrow up to $20,500 per school year. Graduate or professional students enrolled in certain health profession programs may receive additional Direct Unsubsidized Loan amounts each academic year. Contact your schools financial aid office for details.
  • Direct PLUS LoansEligible graduate or professional students who need to borrow more than the maximum unsubsidized loan amounts to meet their education costs may apply for a PLUS loan. A credit check will be completed during the application process.

Checking Your Application Status

Once you complete the FAFSA, you should hear back within one to two weeks regarding your eligibility. If you dont hear back, you can check the status online on the FAFSA home page. Sign in and click on the My FAFSA tab to check your applications status and the possibility of obtaining a Pell Grant.

This program is just one way to get financial assistance for college. Since the funds are limited, this is one of those first-come, first-serve scenarios where the earlier you apply, the higher your chances of getting an award become.

It is a need-based award as well, which the Department of Education takes into consideration when you complete your FAFSA, so higher income students likely will not qualify. Exhaust all your options for federal aid, as this can help decrease the amount of student aid programs you need to consider, helping you decrease college costs overall.

About The National Science Foundation

The National Science Foundation is an independent Federal agency created by the National Science Foundation Act of 1950, as amended . The Act states the purpose of the NSF is “to promote the progress of science to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare by supporting research and education in all fields of science and engineering.”

NSF funds research and education in most fields of science and engineering. It does this through grants and cooperative agreements to more than 2,000 colleges, universities, K-12 school systems, businesses, informal science organizations and other research organizations throughout the US. The Foundation accounts for about one-fourth of Federal support to academic institutions for basic research.

NSF receives approximately 55,000 proposals each year for research, education and training projects, of which approximately 11,000 are funded. In addition, the Foundation receives several thousand applications for graduate and postdoctoral fellowships. The agency operates no laboratories itself but does support National Research Centers, user facilities, certain oceanographic vessels and Arctic and Antarctic research stations. The Foundation also supports cooperative research between universities and industry, US participation in international scientific and engineering efforts, and educational activities at every academic level.

The National Science Foundation Information Center may be reached at 292-5111.

California New York And Florida Top Texas In State Grants

How I Received Over $46,000 to go to College! | No Loans

In AY 20192020, Texas spent about $560 million on grant aid for postsecondary students, less than a quarter of what was spent by California and less two-thirds of what was spent by New York and Florida.

State grant aid may be based on financial need, academic merit, a combination of need and merit, or other factors, like veteran status. In Texas, all grant aid is either primarily need-based or has a need-based component. This includes aid that is funded not from legislative appropriations but from institutional revenues, such as the Texas Public Educational Grant . This type of aid is often viewed as a form of tuition discounting, in which higher prices paid by more affluent students allow students with more financial need to pay less. TPEG, Student Deposit Scholarships, and other such tuition set-aside programs are not included in the state grant aid totals shown above. Tuition exemptions and waivers are also not included in the totals above as they are not considered state grant aid.

Although primarily need-based, maintaining the TEXAS Grant also involves academic requirements. To remain eligible for the grant, the student must maintain a grade point average of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, meet Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements, and complete at least 24 credit hours per award year.

Subsidized vs Unsubsidized Federal Student Loans
    • a. Federal Pell Grant

The Federal Pell Grant is designed to help pay college-related expenses. The exact dollar award is determined by congress. Funds are calculated each year based on a) the students Expected Family Contribution EFC and b) the number of hours the student is registered each term for classes required for the major.

The College uses the ED Express to calculate the students Pell Grant award by utilizing the Pell Grant chart provided by the Department of Education. Pell Grant funds are awarded for the fall and spring semesters at the beginning of the school year with the summer funds at a later date. The maximum Pell Grant for full-time students is established by the Department of Education.

The Federal Pell Grant award is prorated when a student is enrolled in less than 12 credit hours in a semester . Depending on the amount of Pell grant eligibility, the chart below may not apply to all students. Some students attending less than full time may not be eligible to receive a Pell grant award:

    • 25% of award when taking less than 6 semester hours.
    • 50% of award when taking 6-8 semester hours.
    • 75% of award when taking 9-11 semester hours.
    • 100% of award when taking 12 or more semester hours.

How Much Can You Expect To Receive With A Pell Grant

The Federal Pell Grant is by far the largest federal grant program for undergraduate students. While the maximum award amount is $6,895, you may only qualify for a portion of those funds. The amount you will actually receive will depend on several factors, including:

    • Your financial aid need
    • Your status as a full-time or part-time student
    • Your plans to attend school for a full academic year or less

If you are eligible for a grant, you will be able to receive a portion or up to the full amount until June 30, 2022. Starting on July 1, 2022, the award is set to increase as it does so annually, but exactly how much it will increase will be determined by Congress. You will, however, receive the full amount you qualify for. If you qualify for other grants for college or types of financial aid, it will not impact the amount you can receive. You will also be only allowed to receive the award for one school at a time.
