What Is An Outside Scholarship
Outside scholarships, also known as private scholarships, are scholarships that are not funded by a students college or the government. Entities or institutions that award outside scholarships include: companies, associations, specific groups, and charities. Private individuals may also set up outside scholarships to help students along their educational journey.
Outside Scholarships And College Financial Aid
If all the aid you receive outside scholarships, financial aid from your college, and government grants and loans ends up being $300 or more above your calculated need, the federal government requires your college to reduce the amount of need-based financial aid it awards you.
If you dont report your outside scholarship awards to your colleges financial aid office, you might receive whats called an overaward and youll have to pay back that money.

How To Apply Funds From Outside Scholarships
Applying for scholarships is a time-consuming process and organizations have different schedules for disbursement. We urge you not to rely solely upon scholarships from Purdue Global.
Some of the funds provided by public and private agencies may be paid directly to Purdue Global . This is considered third-party billing. Through Purdue Globals third-party billing process, the agency that provides the scholarship will receive a bill and send payment directly to Purdue Global.
Scholarship third-party billing is only available as an option if the student/agency provides the necessary tuition assistance documents before each term of enrollment. The tuition assistance documents must meet all standard requirements and will provide Purdue Global with direct bill authorization. If the private agency determines you are no longer eligible to receive a scholarship, you will be responsible for paying the tuition balance.

Guide To Outside Scholarships
Outside Scholarships are awards that come from agencies outside the University of Arkansas. There are thousands of scholarship agencies in the world, and UA students typically bring in $5 million in outside scholarships each year. The average Outside Scholarship received by U of A students is over $1,700.
Scholarship agencies vary widely by scholarship amount and eligibility criteria, such as college major, intended career, research interests, academic excellence, volunteer experience, race/ethnicity, home town/state, or parent’s employers.
Reputable scholarship search sites include Big Future and FastWeb, two nation-wide scholarship search engines. We encourage you to utilize multiple search engines in your search for scholarship funding.
Be cautious regarding organizations that charge a fee to help you find scholarships. Most legitimate scholarship searches are free. However, some professional organizations require membership in their organization as part of the eligibility requirements. In this case, the membership fee should allow you many benefits in addition to scholarship eligibility.
If you have questions about the legitimacy of an organization, contact the relevant academic department. For example, if you are uncertain about a chemical society, contact the Chemistry Department.
How To Find Scholarships
There so are different kinds of scholarships, some get pretty wild. However, the majority of scholarships will fall into 3 categories: need-based, merit-based, and minority-based. Within these 3 types, there are a lot of subcategories. Here are just a few.
- Through your college
Its important to know what types of scholarships you can apply to, as it will help you refine your search and save you precious time. If you qualify for a scholarship, I encourage you to apply for it.
When I was searching for scholarships, I had it down to a science. I never qualified for need-based so that got rid of a lot of them. I am Native American so I could apply for some of the minority-based scholarships. However, I couldnt apply for scholarships that were for minorities who were low-income. You will quickly figure out what you are eligible for which will help you dial in what to apply to.

Why Does It Seem So Hard To Secure An Outside Scholarship
If you are finding it difficult to secure an outside scholarship you are not alone. Every year thousands of students search and apply for scholarships but are unsuccessful. There are 2 main reasons for this:
For example, some private scholarships are only available to students at a certain high school. While many would qualify, what if that student could only receive the funds if they went to a particular college? Some students would still probably make be eligible for the funds, but what if the scholarship was only available to them if they went to a certain high school, attended a particular college, and they had to choose a major in a specific area of study?
Unfortunately, you can see how quickly some scholarships can exclude the number of recipients that are able to receive it. The good news is that if you happen to fit the exact demographic, you have a good shot of being granted the scholarship.
Accepting An Outside Scholarship
For financial aid recipients, scholarships are credited against any remaining need or the student’s Self-Help and loan expectations, thus reducing the amount the student may need to borrow or work. Because the amount of financial aid a student receives cannot exceed the need determined by the federal formula, all outside scholarships and awards must be reported to Financial Aid and Scholarships. Students who are awarded a scholarship or award not included on MyAwards must notify our office using the Change-in-Aid form. Students may be billed for any aid received in excess of their financial need.

Coordination Of Scholarships And Other Financial Aid
Students are required to report any outside assistance to the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships.
The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships is responsible for coordinating student resources for the campus. Federal and state regulations require the coordination of all financial aid awards with all resources, including internal and external scholarships and grants, fellowships, stipends, fee waivers , and vocational rehabilitation and other educational benefits.
The total amount of assistance from all sources cannot exceed the Cal Poly Pomona yearly Cost of Attendance . In addition, almost all federal, state, and Cal Poly Pomona grant programs require unmet financial need. All forms of financial aid, including outside scholarships, third-party payments, and tuition & fee waivers must be coordinated with a students aid package to ensure that these conditions are met. When our office becomes aware of additional aid or resources, the funding will be added to the student’s financial aid record and any necessary adjustments to existing aid will be made accordingly. If a reduction in an aid program is necessary, aid reductions will be done in the most advantageous way for the student.
Please visit our Financial Aid Policies Page to review our full Coordination of Financial Aid & Resources policy.

Be Strategic In Looking For Scholarships
Even though the scholarship databases can be a great way to filter through scholarships fast, you still have to be strategic in selecting the ones that ideally fit you. Instead of applying for a simple leadership scholarship with one winner in a national pool, focus on scholarships where there are numerous winners and the criteria is more narrow.
For example, if the scholarship is regional instead of national, with contestants having to be in a narrow age group with a specific talent, then this scholarship might be better to apply for being that the list of participants will be much less. Instead of casting a wide net pursuing every possible scholarship out there, be more strategic in your search.
