My Academic And/or Professional Goals Align With Rotarys Mission

Rotarians around the world are united in their commitment to Rotaryssix global causes: promoting peace fighting disease providing clean water, sanitation, and hygiene saving mothers and children supporting education and growing local economies. Rotary Global Grant Scholarships fund students who seek to promote these causes in their academic and professional careers. So if youre hoping to pursue a career in global health, community development, or peacebuilding, this scholarship could be an invaluable asset.

On the other hand, dont panic if your proposed course of study doesnt match up with one of these areas. Just because your degree isnt in peace studies or international development doesnt mean this scholarship isnt right for you. Rotarians understand that less conventional areas of study can be relevant to promoting their causes. Its all about how you pitch your idea to them .

In the last 15 years this District has supported over 200 Scholars on either the former Ambassadorial scheme or the current Global Grant scheme. The majority of these have studied within our District and been funded by their home Rotary Clubs and Districts, but District 1090 has also funded one scholar each year to study overseas or in our District.

Rotary Graduate Scholarships are funded by Rotary Foundation Global Grants and all applications for Global Grants must fit one or more of the Areas of Focus. To read more about the Areas of Focus, visit the Rotary Foundation webpages on the Rotary International website.

    The Rotary Foundation

The Rotary Club Global Grant system worksin an interesting way. There is no specific project period or applicationperiod we can approach them at any time during the year. There is no specific scholarshipamount it should be above $30,000 and under $200,000 based on your needs. Itdoes not even have the same office to deal with all applications basically, applicants should apply through their local home clubs whose attitude may varya lot. In my case, the money actually came from the pocket of the Rotary Clubin Kaohsiung county , but I still needed to have the consent ofthe host club and the international Rotary board.

The main challenge with the Rotary ClubGlobal Grant is the application process is unclear. Therefore, you may encountersome confusion during the process, depending on how supportive your home clubis.

The advantage is that, instead of competingwith thousands of people for a handful of opportunities, we can create ourown opportunity by contacting the Rotary clubs proactively for funding. Besides,Rotary Global Grants have no restriction on English language abilities, countryof study, and discipline .

    Receive Approval From Rotary International

If youre fortunate enough to be selected as your districts Global Grant Scholar, youll have made it past the most difficult part of the application process! Now your application just needs final approval from Rotary International. The deadline to submit your application materials to Rotary International isnt until summer, but your district may set an earlier internal deadline, so make sure you communicate openly with them about that. Youll need to provide proof of acceptance to your graduate program at this stage in the process, so make sure you have the necessary documents from your institution.

Your sponsoring club and district will work with you to fill in the necessary forms on Rotary Internationals online application portal. No big surprises here: You will be answering similar questions to those you answered on your district application. Once submitted, someone from Rotary International will review your application to ensure that you meet all of the requirements and that your proposed course of study aligns with Rotarys mission and global causes. In other words, theyre double-checking that the Rotary district you applied through has done a thorough job, which is usually the case: The vast majority of applications to Rotary International are approved. If all goes well, your application will be among them, and youll officially be recognized as a Rotary Global Grant Scholar!

Build A Relationship With A Rotary Club

All Global Grant Scholars begin with the same step: finding a local Rotary Club to sponsor their application. Your sponsoring club needs to be located within the Rotary district where you live and/or work, though it need not be the club that is geographically closest to you. You can use this search tool to find a club in your area.

Most clubs will be eager to sponsor a Rotary Global Grant Scholar, as its an exciting opportunity for them to be a part of your academic and professional journey. Clubs arent responsible for covering any part of the scholarship cost, so funding isnt a concern on their end. Its still important to start your search early, however, since clubs can only sponsor one applicant at a time and there may be many people applying in your district. No two clubs are the same, so I suggest you get in touch with multiple clubs in your area and get to know its members. If youre invited, take the opportunity to attend a club meeting its a great way to share more about yourself and learn more about Rotary.

And remember, clubs arent just there to sign off on your application. They can also be an invaluable resource in helping you build a compelling pitch while providing moral support at every step of the application process.
