Grad Student Financial Aid: What You Need To Know
There are two basic types of financial aid for graduate students. The first is non-need-based financial aid in the second need-based financial aid.
Non-need-based financial aid is also sometimes called merit-based aid. The type of funding is awarded based on your academic performance, athletic ability, or community activities.
Need-based financial aid is based on your financial needs. This is usually granted in the form of loans, grants, and work-study.
Student loans can be granted by the federal government. However, they also can come from private entities like banks or financial institutions. There can be a lot of differences between loan types, so its worth looking into the details before making your decision about funding.
Once you have started graduate school, your financial aid journey isnt necessarily over. You will be required to report any changes in your financial situation as soon as they happen to the financial aid office. This might include experiencing unforeseen economic hardship or receiving outside awards.

How To Apply For Grad Student Scholarships
If youre wondering how to get scholarships as a grad student, its not as difficult as you might expect. Once you have found a list of scholarships that you qualify for, there are a number of steps to take.
First, make sure that you arent just applying for one big scholarship. Look for a number of scholarships to apply for. You might find that piecing together several smaller scholarships works better than aiming for one large dollar amount scholarship.
Next, youll need to gather the necessary documents. These include all of your awards, grades, academic achievements, and other key information. This way, youll have it all available when you are ready to apply.
The next step is to make a spreadsheet. This will help you stay organized. In the spreadsheet, you can track deadlines, the status of your application, and more.
It is now time to write the required essays for the scholarships you are applying to. Not all scholarships require essays, but many do.
Is also common that scholarship application request letters of recommendation. Brainstorm about the best possible references you have. These might be professors from your undergraduate education or employers.
Sometimes there is an interview process attached to scholarship applications. It is worth preparing for the interview ahead of time. Treat these interviews as if they were job interviews.

Hannah Was Awarded The Ralph And Josephine Smith Scholarship Which Covers $20000 In Tuition Costs
The scholarship is awarded each spring, with an application open to all seniors within Warrior Run School District. Ralph and Josephine Smith were both longtime Watsontown residents, and their scholarship has awarded some $260,000 to Warrior Run students to date.
Hannah is using her scholarship to pursue a career in law.
I fell in love with the topic in high school, she says. Ive been looking into criminal law. I want to be a prosecutor one day.
Hannah found out shed been awarded the scholarship in her last days before graduation. But when it was announced at the senior awards ceremony, she didnt know how large the payout would be
When she later found out, it caught her off guard.
I was so incredibly grateful for the opportunity, that they were willing to take a chance on me. Now I want to prove them right.
While many students like Hannah qualify for financial aid, it often ends after their first year. Then, students must decide whether to take out loans or drop out of college. For recipients of the Ralph and Josephine Smith Scholarship, that decision is made a little easier thanks to yearly payouts.
We asked Hannah if she had any advice for Warrior Run students applying to this years scholarship.
Just be yourself in the applications. Ive realized that schools and scholarships arent necessarily looking for the perfect candidate. They want to know what makes you special, not just your grades. Be open and personable.
