Tips On Applying For Student Grants
1. Consider your characteristics. Each year grants are awarded to thousands of individuals on a virtually unlimited number of traits. Some common grant categories include:
2. Match yourself to the eligibility requirements. Review all of the details and make sure you fit the grant profile. Do you have the required grade point average? Do you fit within the income requirements? Does your school participate in this particular grant program? Do not waste your time applying for grants unless the minimum standards are met.
3. At the same time, do not limit yourself unnecessarily. By widening your grant search, you may find lucrative grants that are indirectly connected to your selected field of study. Applicants may also gain significant advantages by attending a college in a nearby state. Obscure grants that no one has ever heard of can work to your advantage by applying, you will face less competition. Remember to search for synonyms. For example, English majors could search for grants related to English, writing, editing, publishing, poetry, authors, novels, essays, and other relevant topics.
5. Apply for need-based, merit-based, talent-based, and project-based grants, if applicable. Submit the FAFSA, but do not overlook other local and national grant sources. Apply to as many funding sources as possible.

Common Mistakes To Avoid
There are plenty of obvious mistakes an applicant can make to sink their chances of winning a scholarship, like missing a deadline or failing to fill out every part of the application. But there are other things that can take you out of the running. Below are a few common but less obvious mistakes you should try to avoid:
Only searching for scholarships online
It’s easy to depend on the internet when searching for scholarships but that can be a big mistake. There are plenty of scholarship opportunities that are hard, if not impossible, to locate online. Visit your school’s financial aid office and talk to community members and organizations. They may have the inside scoop on smaller, locally-sponsored scholarship opportunities. Other places to try include your local library, job fairs, and business events or conventions. Arkin Buyukozturn notes, âA lot of times scholarships and other opportunities are announced at these events.â
Not taking the interview seriously
If your scholarship requires an interview, prepare for it like you would an interview for your dream job. Consider the questions you’ll likely be asked and prepare your answers ahead of time. And dress appropriately. That goes for online interviews as well.
Not maintaining a good GPA
Grade point average is almost always a primary consideration for MBA scholarship committees. If your GPA starts to drop, meet with professors and advisors to see what you can do to get back on track immediately.

In a 2018 survey of 10,000+ graduates of MBA programs from 126 schools, it was reported that 18% of students borrowed at least $100,000 to finance their MBA degree.
Can You Ask For More Money
In some cases, applicants may be able to negotiate higher awards. This often works best when the scholarship is awarded by the school. Applicants may have a better chance of negotiating a higher offer if they have received offers from multiple schools.
The best way to improve your chances of getting more money is to ask. You can put your request in writing and explain your needs. Be polite and refrain from seeming demanding. Youre simply inquiring whether the school has any flexibility to provide additional funding.

But its important to borrow responsibly so you can pay back your loans on time after you earn your degree. Limit your borrowing to the amount youll need for the cost of tuition and related expenses. Evaluate what your anticipated monthly loan payments might be versus how much you expect to earn in your post-school career. You can research your potential salary through professional associations and the U.S. Department of Labor, which lists the median pay for many fields.
