Several organizations offer scholarship assistance to the dependents of former military personnel who have been wounded and are disabled because of wartime service. Organization sometimes limit eligibility to biological children, and sometimes offer scholarships to grandchildren or stepchildren. Some scholarships for dependents of disabled veterans have certain age requirements an applicant must meet.

Frederick C Branch Scholarship Program

Amount: Varies

The Fredrick C. Branch scholarship is named after the first black officer to serve in the United States Marine Corps. The NROTC scholarship is awarded to military children that plan to attend one of the 17 historical black colleges in the United States.

Each year the Fredrick C. Branch scholarship awards nearly 70 Branch scholarships to recipients. Each awardee receives two, four year installments, or one, three year installment.

The scholarship fund is open to all children of military personnel so long as they plan to attend one of the 17 black historical colleges.

Colonel Alice A Kerr Veterans Scholarship Fund

Only one percent of our nations eligible population answers the call to serve in the United States Armed Forces, and those that do answer the call put their civilian lives on hold to protect and defend the United States. The Donors of the Colonel Alice A. Kerr Veterans Scholarship feel very strongly about supporting veterans after their military service ends. The Donors know the transition from military service to civilian life can be fraught with many obstacles, including the financial gap between GI benefits and the cost of higher education and they hope to bridge the gap with this scholarship. The Colonel Alice A. Kerr Veterans Scholarship will be awarded to either a graduate or undergraduate University of Miami student with financial need who served their country honorably while on active duty in the United States armed forces. Applicants must submit the current FAFSA and CCS Profile and must complete this application form. Completed applications are due no later than August 1.

Dependents Educational Assistance Program For Veterans

This program is also called the DEA agenda that gives the free education of 45 months which is approximately 4 years. For the eligibility of this program, the dependents of the veteran have the age range 18 to 26. And the child of the dead veterans and disabled veteran who has a service-connected disability will be eligible.

Under the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society Education Program, students may apply for grants and interest-free loans to pursue undergraduate or masters degrees in the US at an accredited two- or four-year post-secondary, technical, or vocational institution. These financial assistance opportunities are available to children and spouses of active duty, retired and deceased Sailors and Marines, and those enrolled in the MECEP or MECP programs.

Students who are a child of a deceased sailor or marine are eligible for the Gold Star Scholarship Program, which covers $500 to $2,500 in education expenses per year. Renewals for four academic years may be applied for by applicants who demonstrate financial need.

This scholarship is open to applicants who are:

  • Child of a Sailor or Marine who is on active duty, retired, or deceased
  • Students enrolled in MECEP/MECP
  • DEERS registration is required
  • Enrolled full-time for the entire academic year at the same institution and pursued their undergraduate or masters degree at a post-secondary, technical, or vocational institution in the US accredited by a recognized regional or national accrediting body by the US Secretary of Education.
  • A participant in the Title IV Financial Aid Program of the United States Department of Education
  • Using the FAFSA SAR form, demonstrate your financial need

Who Counts As A Military Dependent

The term military dependent is generally used by the US Army to refer to spouses and children of those serving in the military, except for adults age 21 or older. Families with parents, adult children, foster children, siblings, cousins, nieces, and nephews of service members may also qualify, depending on individual circumstances.

Free Health Care For Combat Veterans

Combat veterans who have been released from active duty on or after January 8th, 2003, are eligible to enroll in the VA health care system for five years from the date of discharge.

Am I Eligible For Education Benefits

You may be eligible for VA education benefits if youre the child or spouse of a service member and one of these descriptions listed is true of the service member.

One of these must be true:

  • The service member died in the line of duty after September 10, 2001, or
  • The service member is missing in action or was captured in the line of duty by a hostile force, or
  • The service member was detained by force while in the line of duty by a foreign government or power, or
  • The service member is in the hospital or getting outpatient treatment for a service-connected permanent and total disability, and is likely to be discharged for that disability. A service-connected permanent and total disability is a disability resulting from your service that doesnt go away.

You may be eligible for VA education benefits if youre the child or spouse of a Veteran and one of these descriptions listed is true of the Veteran.

One of these must be true:

  • The Veteran is permanently and totally disabled due to a service-connected disability, or
  • The Veteran died while on active duty or as a result of a service-connected disability

If youre a dependent who doesnt meet the above criteria, you may still qualify for VA education benefits if the Veteran or service member transferred some or all of their Post-9/11 GI Bill entitlement to you while they were on active duty.

The Educational Dollars For Duty Program

For Florida National Guard Soldiers and Airmen, and can provide public tuition for the period of the Guard members service.

Educational Dollars for Duty will pay up to 100 percent of public tuition and will pay private tuition at the average Florida state school public tuition rate.

Business License Fee Waivers For Veterans And Their Spouses

The Department of Business and Professional Regulation can waive the initial licencing fee, the initial application fee, and the initial unlicensed activity fee for military veterans as well as their spouses at the time of discharge. They will need to apply to the Department for a state professional license within 60 months after the veteran has been honorably discharged from the military. This law applies to over 20 professions under DBPRs jurisdiction.

John Cornelius/max English Memorial Scholarship

Children and grandchildren of active, Reserve, retired, or honorably discharged Marine Corps Tanker members and current MCTA members may apply for an award sponsored by the Marine Corps Tankers Association.

It would be best if you were a graduating senior from a high school or a full-time student in an accredited junior college or university with at least 12 units. Applicants should begin the application process as soon as possible as it is comprehensive. Applicants must submit an application form, write an essay, provide a transcript, two letters of recommendation, evidence of extracurricular activity, and describe the need for the scholarship.

Wings Over America Scholarship

The Wings Over America Scholarship is open to children and spouses of US Navy personnel. Candidates whose parents or spouses are currently on active duty, have died, were honorably discharged, or are now retired are included. Each year applicants receive the scholarship based on their academic achievement, extracurricular activities, work experience, community service, recommendations, and essays. The Wings Over America program includes community college and trade schools and traditional four-year colleges. Scholarship amounts differ, but they typically average $4,600.

Since 2006, Hope For The Warriors has provided more than $412,000 in scholarships to over 140 families of post-9/11 veterans. Hope For The Warriors currently offers five scholarships:

  • The Honorary Scholarship for post-grad and graduate students
  • The New Beginnings scholarship for students pursuing an associates degree
  • The Restoring Family Scholarship, which is only available for Gold Star Spouses
  • The Restoring Hope Scholarship for students pursuing a masters degree in social work

    The Post-9/11 GI Bill, which took effect in 2009, provides the most generous roster of education perks, and they are administered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.     Chief Petty Officer Scholarship Fund

    The Chief Petty Office Scholarship Fund grants various funds to numerous recipients every year. All children of active duty, retired, or reserve Chief Petty Officers are eligible for the award, including adopted and step-children.

    The non-profit organization established the scholarship to generate and distribute funds specifically for educational opportunities. Candidates eligible for scholarship awards are non-uniformed spouses or dependent children of all Chief Petty Officers in the U.S. Navy.

    How to apply: The guidelines for applying include:

    • Be about to graduate or have graduated from high school or earned a General Equivalency Diploma .
    • Must intend to enter or currently be enrolled in a community college, vocational college, or university.
    • Be immediate family members of Chief Petty Officers, or adopted or step-children.

    The deadline to enter is April 1.

    Folds Of Honor Foundation

    The Folds of Honor Foundation offers scholarships of up to $5,000 to the dependents of deceased and disabled veterans. To be eligible, applicants must have a grade-point average of at least 2.0 on a scale of 4.0. The Folds of Honor Foundation offers two types of scholarships: Immediate-Use Scholarships and Future-Use Scholarships. The organization awards Immediate-Use Scholarships to dependents who are currently attending college and awards Future-Use Scholarships to dependents who are currently too young to attend college.

    Like many other states, Florida offers hiring preference to veterans, with special emphasis on those who served during wartime, those who have VA-rated service connected disabilities, and qualifying surviving spouses of deceased veterans.

    How To Apply For Free Tuition In Virginia

    To apply, use the myVMSDEP portal to establish an account and submit an online application.

    Womens Army Corps Veterans Association Scholarship

    Children, grandchildren, and nieces and nephews of women who served in the Army may apply for the Womens Army Corps Veterans Association Scholarship. Scholars are selected based on academic success and leadership demonstrated through co-curricular activities and community involvement. A $1,500 scholarship will be awarded each year, and recipients will be notified by mail or email. They will forward the check to the accepted institution.

    Students must have a 3.5 GPA or higher and plan to attend an accredited college or university full-time to qualify for the scholarship. Academic achievement, leadership qualities, recommendations, and a biographical sketch are all considered in making selections. Applications must be submitted by February 2 each year.
