Becoming A Us Presidential Scholar In The Arts

Rock Dance Project – Men

The first step to becoming a U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts is to apply to YoungArts national arts competition. Competition winners at the Finalist level who attend National YoungArts Week are considered for nomination by their respective discipline-specific panelists based on their artistic achievement and participation in the program. Candidates must:

  • Meet the eligibility requirements and academic standards set by the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars.
  • Graduate between January and August of the year theyre being consideredIf a finalist attends National YoungArts Week but is not yet set to graduate, they become eligible for candidacy in their graduation year and will receive instructions from YoungArts.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher on a 4.0 scale
  • Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States

Once nominated, artists must further apply directly to the program once they receive their invitation through the U.S. Department of Education and adhere to all application requirements to be considered.

New York City Dance Alliance Scholarships

Launched in 2010, the New York City Dance Alliance Foundation has presented more than $3 million in dance scholarships to graduating high school seniors and undergrads. Recipients receive up to $25,000 apiece for pursuing performance-based dance BA or BFA degrees. Interested dancers must attend a four-day summer workshop in Manhattan. Faculty from eight U.S. colleges, including Mercyhurst, Montclair State, and Southern Methodist, attend this workshop to recruit top talent. On January 27th, scholarship finalists from participating dance studios will audition by performing one ballet and one contemporary piece.

Dr Earl James Fahringer Performing Arts Scholarship

The Hemophilia Foundation of Southern California bestows the $1,000 Dr. Earl James Fahringer Performing Arts Scholarship to first-time college applicants with bleeding disorders. Eligible recipients will be enrolled full-time at accredited U.S. institutions with artistic majors like dance and drama. Students must be originally from nine Southern California counties, such as Los Angeles, San Luis Obispo, and Riverside. Applications can be faxed or emailed until June 28th each year. Dont forget to attach an official transcript, two reference letters, a resume, and proof of college enrollment. Six short-answer biographical essay questions are included.

About The Us Presidential Scholars In The Arts

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson in order to recognize and honor the nations top graduating high school seniors. In 1979, the program was expanded to include students who demonstrated talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. The program was expanded again in 2015 to recognize students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical education fields.

Scholars are selected annually by the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars, based on academic achievement, personal characteristics, leadership and service activities and writing ability. Every year, thousands of candidates qualify for the program based on outstanding performance on the College Board SAT and ACT exams, and through nominations made by Chief State School Officers, other partner recognition programs or YoungArts.

Iowa Scholarship For The Arts Program

The Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs oversees the Iowa Scholarship for the Arts Program to grant $1,500 to outstanding in-state high school seniors pursuing collegiate education. Students must be accepted as full-time freshmen at Iowa universities with relevant majors, including dance and dance education. Immediate family members to Iowa Arts Council staff are ineligible. This intensive includes dance techniques such as floorwork, ballet, dance theater, partnering, improvisation, and flying low taught by invited guest artists and director Valeria Gonzalez. In addition to our physical training workshop, and our creative choreographic process, the students will have the time to engage in conversation, journaling, holistic methods and mentorship. Every VALLETO summer intensive culminates with a performance project open to the public.

Joci Performing Arts Scholarship Program

Debuted in 2009, the Las Casas Foundations Joci Performing Arts Scholarship Program is named for founder Jocelyn Straus who raised more than $10 million to restore Texas theatres. Each Spring, Joci Awards provide $100,000 in college dance scholarships to 25 finalists from the Greater San Antonio area. Rising stars from 46 local high schools compete in four distinct categories: acting, dance, vocal, and theatre production. Young dancers can utilize cash prizes to pursue any collegiate major at any U.S. institution. Applications are accepted from Texans in grades 9-12 with resumes, headshots, and an essay response until February 9th.

Financial Aid Offer Letters

Financial Aid Offer letters will be processed for students with complete files in mid-June. Students will receive an email when the offer is available in their Cadence financial aid portal under the messages tab. Hard copies of offer letters are available upon request.

Scholarship amounts generally stay the same for each year you are enrolled in your program of study, although tuition will increase by 4-5% each year. Kate Neal Kinley Memorial Fellowship

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaigns College of Fine & Applied Arts established the Kate Neal Kinley Memorial Fellowship in memory of an accomplished 19th-century alumna. Each Spring, one $20,000 scholarship goes to Illinois graduates who pursue further studies in performing arts disciplines, including dance and theatre. Priority is given to recent graduates who are 25 years old or younger. Fellows are selected based on artistic talent, academic marks, moral character, and performance achievements. Bachelors recipients in good educational standing must apply before December 3rd for graduate training funding in America or abroad.

Brenau Summer Dance Intensive

Summer Dance Intensives for High School and College Students

Brenau Summer Dance Intensive is two weeks of rigorous dance training from June 5-17, 2023. The program will focus on Ballet, Jazz, and Contemporary technique supplemented by Ballroom, Variations, Pas de Deux, Yoga, Pilates, Mens Class, Pointe, West African Dance, Nutrition for Dancers, and Repertory.

During the two weeks, dancers will rehearse repertory and new works by established and emerging local and regional professional dance artists to be performed in a showcase at the John S. Burd Center for the Performing Arts on Brenaus Historic Campus in Gainesville, Georgia, in the afternoon of Saturday, June 17, 2023.

All classes and auditions will be held at Brenau East Studios: 1001 Chestnut Street, Gainesville, GA 30501, and the Brenau Fitness Center at 800 Washington St. SE Gainesville, GA 30501.

Yvonne Brown Collodi College Scholarships

The Chicago National Association of Dance Masters initiated the Yvonne Brown Collodi College Scholarship in 1997 to honor the 30-year Board of Directors member. Four dance scholarships are awarded at the $500, $1,000, $1,500, and $2,000 levels for $5,000 total. Current CNADM members must be enrolled full-time at U.S. universities with a dance major or minor. Applicants have until June 1st to submit an application and a five-minute audition video. Interviews are scheduled for during the Training School or National Ballet Forum. Recent winners are attending Indiana University, Viterbo University, Saint Marys University, and more.

Back This Year Emerging Choreographers Workshop

May 30 June 3, 2023

The Emerging Choreographers Workshop is 5 days prior to the Brenau Summer Dance Intensive for interested high school and college dance choreographers to work on their craft in an open, exploratory and focused lab setting. A dance class in a different style or form will begin the day. Chosen choreographers and dancers will then take a daily class in choreographic technique and practice those skills in the afternoon while creating on dancers. Brenau faculty and guest teaching artists will be mentoring choreographers in their work during the intensive. Works will be presented in an informal setting Saturday June 4th in the evening in one of our performance spaces.

Two choreographers will be chosen to present their works in a formal setting at the conclusion of the Brenau Summer Dance Intensive on June 17, 2023.

Shelton Hall Memorial Scholarship

Performing at CenterStage since 1979, the Reston Community Players gives back with its $2,000 Shelton Hall Memorial Scholarship for dance education in America. Eligible applicants are U.S. citizens who reside in Virginias Fairfax County and are accepted at any accredited performing arts school. Graduating high school seniors must enter dance majors full-time with a 3.0 or better cumulative GPA. Dancers must tape themselves performing a five-minute routine before the April 26th deadline. Incoming freshmen need to submit a free application, college acceptance letter, production resume, and list of dance training experiences too.

A Typical Day At The Summer Dance Intensive

9 STUDENTS OF RUSSIAN MASTERS WERE GIVEN SCHOLARSHIPS IN THE CONTEST ...

The day begins in one of Juilliard’s six large studios with a ballet technique class, pointe, or allegro class, followed by partnering or modern. After lunch, dancers take two additional classes which vary by day and include yoga, hip-hop, improvisation, modern, and other dance workshops. In addition to the daily technique classes, every dancer participates in evening rehearsals of new choreography and repertoire. These pieces are shown on the final day in a showing for family and friends.

Teachers include members of the Juilliard College Dance Division faculty as well as renowned guest artists.

Students may stay in the Meredith Willson Residence Hall, adjacent to the Juilliard School building, and eat in the Juilliard cafeteria, a full service dining room. Students living in the residence hall are supervised by live-in resident hall staff.

There is also time to see New York City. On free evenings and weekends, the dancers can opt to attend many activities supervised by the residence hall hosts, including Broadway shows, walks in nearby Central Park, movies, and free outdoor performances at Lincoln Center.

Each Summer Urbanity Dance Welcomes Intermediate

Each summer, intermediate to advanced dancers ages 11-24 are selected for a unique contemporary dance intensive to work with nationally-acclaimed guest artists, Urbanity Dance Company members, and Urbanitys most popular faculty. Students receive 7 hours of daily instruction from 10-5pm in ballet, modern, and contemporary technique, as well as supplementary courses in jazz, musical theater, improv, hip hop, and repertory. The 2022 program will run from . Students may choose to attend all three weeks, two weeks, or just one week.

WEEK 1: MUSIC VIDEO Learn a new work that will be professionally recorded, edited, and presented.

Tuition Scholarships

Tuition Scholarships are awarded based on a combination of your work as a dance artist in conjunction with financial need. Tuition scholarship awards range from $200 to $2,390.

You may attend a live audition or submit a video to be considered for a tuition scholarship. Additional materials are required via online submission from all applicants.

Tuition Scholarships Required Materials

  • Demonstration of work as a dance artist :
  • Live Audition: Attend any available live audition to be assessed for your work as a dance artist. Live auditions include a class based in a contemporary movement form with phrase work and improvisation. Live auditions are typically 90 minutes led by an ADF faculty and include an opportunity for Q & A. Portions of class will be filmed. Those attending live auditions can optionally upload one 2-minute video for additional consideration when completing the online scholarship application. OR
  • Video Audition: Submit a 2-minute video of your work as a dance artist. Examples of your work could include: performance/technical skill, choreography, improvisation, dance-based community projects, or embodied research. Well use this video to assess your strengths as a dance artist.
  • Statement of Financial Need: Submit a written one-page statement that explains your current financial situation to help us assess your level of need.
