How I got a Track Scholarship to USC || My NCAA Recruiting Story || KingsleyTV

There can be a lot to comprehend when it comes to athletic standards. Each athletic association has its own range of recruitment standards. With the NCAA Division I generally having the most competitive collegiate conferences, D-I member schools tend to have tougher recruitment standards, but this does vary between conferences and specific schools. For example, conferences such as the SEC, Pac-12 and Big Ten, which tend to be home to some top athletic schools, will tend to have tougher standards in comparison to other Division I institutions. To give you an idea of this, lets take a look at the top female 100m performances from the NCAA D-I during the 2021 outdoor season.

The top five times within Division I ranged from 10.87-11.08, with those athletes competing under Alabama, USC, LSU, N. Carolina A& T and Oregon, schools that belong to the SEC, Pac-12 and Big South conferences. However, if you were to look at a smaller conference, such as the Atlantic 10 conference, the top ranked runner in 2021 ran 11.64. As you can see there is a wide range of performances, even within Division I. So while a top runner within the NCAA may be on a full ride scholarship, that is not to say someone in the middle of the pack, but at the top of a smaller conference, isnt receiving a scholarship as well – it all comes down to the specific school and program. The same goes for the NAIA, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and so on.

How To Get Recruited By College Mens Track And Field Coaches

There are many opportunities to compete in mens track and field, with thousands of colleges offering track and field programs. In some ways, the track and field recruiting process is easier because the events are all time, distance or height-based, making it easier to understand what it takes at the college level. Additionally, each event is recruited and scouted differently: recruiting a high jumper is different than recruiting a distance runner.

The hard part is that most recruits arent going to be hitting the marks of current college athletes, and coaches need to project how a recruit might do once they get to the college level. Likewise, its not always enough for a recruit to be the best on their high school team or in their arearemember, mens track and field recruiting happens on an international level. Current high-school athletes who want to compete at the college level should start comparing their athletic statslike times or distancesagainst national or conference results for their target schools. If your times or marks dont measure up, cast a wider net by exploring different division levels.

College coaches prioritize scholarships for recruits who can make an impact right away and score points at meets. Student-athletes need to target divisions where their scores dont just align with the standards, but where they stand out. For example, a student-athletes times might meet the standards of a NCAA Division 1 school, but they can potentially earn more scholarship money at the Division 2 level where they might make a bigger impact. Of course, this depends on the schools recruiting budget. So, the best way to understand a coachs recruiting needs is to establish a relationship with them and learn more about their recruiting standards.

Additionally, there are steps all recruits can take to secure track and field scholarships:

  • Post athletic profiles online. Its important for recruits to provide coaches with organized records of their times, statistics, academic information and track and field recruiting videos.
  • Excel academically. The NCAA Eligibility Center determines the academic eligibility and amateur status for all NCAA Division 1 and Division 2 athletes.
  • Be proactive. Start by sending an introductory email that includes your online profile, best times, academic information, and personal interest in the program. NCAA Division 1 and 2 coaches cant reach out personally until June 15 after an athletes sophomore year, but theyre reviewing online profiles and evaluating athletes before this time.

How to Earn a D1 Track and Field Scholarship!!! | 3 Tips

The short answer to this question is no, a D1 scholarship offer is not guaranteed.

To be clear, when a coach makes a verbal scholarship offer, it is not a contractual proposal. Verbal offers, as well as verbal pledges made by student-athletes after receiving an offer, are not official. Until the National Letter of Intent is signed, nothing is fixed in stone.

However, its crucial to remember that, while verbal offers and commitments arent legally enforceable, they should be considered seriously by the majority of athletics programs. Furthermore, while D1 scholarships are often guaranteed for four years, this is not the standard.

Since 2012, the NCAA has permitted institutions to offer multi-year scholarships. Furthermore, in 2015, NCAA D1 universities from the Power Five conferences decided to enact a regulation prohibiting the cancellation or non-renewal of multi-year D1 scholarships for any athletic reason.

Outside of major football teams and a few other scenarios, they are not the standard. These scholarships are given to some student-athletes for a single year and then renewed annually.

What Is A D1 Scholarship

How To Get A Track & Field Scholarship (Including Tips & Tricks)

To find out what a D1 scholarship is, we first need to dig deeper into D1 schools.

The NCAA, the worlds largest governing body for intercollegiate athletics, divides its members into divisions. Colleges in Division I are often the largest.

These institutions have the greatest money in their athletic departments, and their sports teams bring in the most money. All of the schools that compete in bowl games and March Madness are D1 schools.

Divisions in the NCAA were created to create parity and level the playing field. Schools competing in divisions should be competing against other schools of equal size and resources.

NCAA D1 institutions have the largest student bodies, athletic budgets, and athletic scholarships when compared to NCAA D2 and D3 schools. The scholarships issued by these top schools are what are called D1 scholarships.

However, only four Division I sports give full athletic scholarships, according to one critical piece of information. Football, mens and womens basketball, and womens volleyball are the sports under question. In all other Division I sports, partial scholarships are used.

At the Division I level, the average sports scholarship is just $10,400, and this figure is slightly inflated by the high-value full scholarships offered. However, the quantity of money available for scholarships may be far less than you had imagined.

That being said, each program has different needs and philosophies when it comes to awarding scholarship money. Unlike other college sports ,most track coaches will be very upfront about what time or mark you will need to make their team and to get a scholarship. The best thing you can do is contact the coaches staff and ask them what it takes to make their team and possibly earn a college track scholarship at their program.
