    Brianna Kruzel Memorial Scholarship

BriAnna Kruzel is a former Little Sister and High School Big Sister, who passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in September 2013. BriAnna’s family would like to carry forward BriAnna’s legacy.

BriAnnas experience with the Big Brothers Big Sisters program was quite unique. When her father was deployed in Iraq, BriAnna began as a Little Sister in the program. Years later, BriAnna decided to become a High School Big Sister as a way to provide the same experience to another child. BriAnna was matched with a Little Sister whose father was deployed overseas. BriAnna and her Little Sister were able to form an instant bond and BriAnna was able to provide advice and support. BriAnna was a dedicated friend and mentor for over two years. She was selected as the 2013 High School Big Sister of the Year for her outstanding commitment to the program and her Little Sister. She was also honored by the St. Cloud Optimist Club with the “Youth Appreciation Award” for her work with Big Brothers Big Sisters.

BriAnna’s family would like to honor her memory by awarding a scholarship to a High School Senior who is a current/past Little or High School Big who has some of the same characteristics that BriAnna had. BriAnna was a very hardworking, dedicated student who worked diligently at achieving the best grades that she could. BriAnna may not have received the “A” that she was striving for but would never give up on her overall grade.

We had a really good year last year financially, and we felt like there was no better time than now to create this scholarship and have it be something that we try to do every single year.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mercer County has established a scholarship fund in memory of late board member Sara E.K.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mercer County has announced a new scholarship fund to honor longtime board member and champion for disadvantaged youth Sara Cooper, who died in June at age 58 after a battle with ALS.

Cooper advocated for others by serving on the boards of several local nonprofits and became a voice for children and young adults with parents suffering from ALS as she documented her three-year-long journey with the disease. This scholarship will honor Coopers legacy by providing disadvantaged youth with the opportunity to pursue post-secondary degree programs.

Sara always wanted to help others, especially the underdog, said Coopers husband Mike Delehanty at a recent BBBS luncheon. She believed that education is the genesis of opportunity.

BBBS Mercer kicked off fundraising for the scholarship on Valentines Day, Feb. 14, noting the fund will benefit high school seniors who exemplify the characteristics that Sara herself reflected throughout her life courage, humility, kindness, generosity and above all else, love.

Sara was a dedicated board member and were honored that her passion for our mission will live on through this scholarship, said BBBS Mercer executive director Kate Noonan. There is no better way to empower our youth than by supporting their educational aspirations.

Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Sedgwick County Scholarship

In 1971, a group of concerned volunteers in Wichita began a program to help prevent young boys from getting into trouble with the law. A separate mentoring program for girls soon followed and by 1978, the two had merged to create Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sedgwick County. One of 500 agencies nationwide, the organization serves boys and girls considered high-risk and who live in single-parent homes. Thousands of young people achieve their full potential through long-term relationships with carefully screened and caring volunteers. There are many different volunteer programs, including intergenerational volunteers, couple and family matches: Mi Amigo, Kevin Easter Cops for Kids and High School Bigs. Each program is suited to assist those youth that might otherwise “fall through the cracks” in our community.

The Sedgwick County organization has been recognized for its outstanding leadership and innovative programs. It was the only agency selected as a “teaching example” at the President’s Summit on America’s Future in 1997.

In 1986, an anonymous contribution established the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sedgwick County Scholarship at Wichita State University for those students who are participants in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.
