Can You Pay For Off
You can pay for off-campus housing with a 529 plan but there are limits. Since housing is considered a qualified education expense, it doesnt matter where you’re living as long as you’re enrolled at least half-time in school.
With that being said, make sure your parents only withdraw the cost of rent that the college included in your financial aid award letter. Anything above that may not be considered a qualified education expense.
This figure is often on the schools website as well. It’s the amount specified by the college as a room and board allowance. If you’re unsure what number to use, call the financial aid office do not guess.
Also, keep in mind that if you’re paying for 12-months of off-campus housing, tax law does not specify whether or not you can withdraw enough money to cover the time that you’re not in school, such as during summer break. Since the guidelines say enrolled at least half-time there could be an issue with withdrawing money if you’re not enrolled in school during the summer months.

Become A Resident Advisor
Also sometimes referred to as resident assistants, resident advisors are college-level mentors whose primary task is creating a supportive and safe environment for students residing in dorms and other student housing options.
RAs are especially helpful for freshmen who have just transitioned from living at home to living alone.
Being an RA is a real job, which means that you will have to carry out duties and responsibilities delegated to you by the school, including but not limited to:
- Facilitating dorm or housing activities
- Resolving conflicts between roommates or residents
- Submitting reports on issues on safety, violations and others
- Responding to requests, reports and emergencies
- Ensuring all residents are following rules and regulations
But just because you want to become an RA in order to enjoy free room and board and/or be able to hone and exhibit your leadership skills doesnt necessarily mean that you can work as one.
There are certain requirements to meet for those who wish to become or stay as RAs. Some of them include:
- Earning a minimum number of credits. Its not uncommon for some colleges and universities to require RA hopefuls to have completed at least 40 credits some institutions may require less.
- Maintaining a certain GPA. Some schools are known to require RA applicants to have a GPA of 2.75 at least. Its also important for RAs to maintain the required GPA if they want to keep the position.
Study The Lease Details
When choosing off-campus housings, another important aspect you need to prioritize include the lease details and duration. Although some students may give lesser regard to this aspect, its crucial to read the fine print of your lease before you sign any contract or commit to any arrangement.
Generally, your lease details consist of all the relevant information about your prospective apartment. This information must include the exact rent amount, payment processes, duration of the lease, and other restrictions that may affect your stay. Also, the common length of the apartment lease may last at least one year. So, before paying for an apartment, determine how long youre going to stay in your apartment, whether its for a year or just for the entire school year.
To avoid a breach of the lease agreement, which can be costly and time-causing, you may consider talking to your landlord or leasing agent. Always consult with an expert about your preferred lease duration and create a coherent negotiation to avoid future conflicts.

Will Scholarships Pay For Housing/misc Too
< p> I received a scholarship from the university that I will probably attend that pays for most, if not all, of the tuition. Will applying for scholarships from sites such as fastweb.com help me anymore? That is, will any scholarships that I may receive be used for housing/meals/textbook/etc? Or is there no reason to apply for more aid?< /p>
< p> Depends on the scholarship. Some are specifically for tuition. Many can be used for any expense.< /p>
< p> Additional scholarships can be used to pay housing and other expenses, up to the full amount of your COA if you are so fortunate. So, yes, it is worth continuing to seek additional aid.< /p>
< p> Thank you for the replies. I have applied for some more scholarships but I don’t know how many I’ll do. I feel a bit guilty when I submit them because while my family is not rich by any means, I know that there are many people that need them more than I do.< /p>
< p> What exactly would going beyond COA entail?< /p>
< p> I don’t know what you are asking about “entail.” The hypothetical concept is that you are so diligent and talented that your multiple scholarships and grants exceed the total cost of attendance , so that after everything is paid there is still money left over. < /p>
< p> Like when your mom gives you 5 dollars to buy a loaf of bread and forgets to ask you for the change. < /p>
< p> It actually depends on what school you will be attending.< /p>
< p> x-posted with musely, my d’s school is a public as well.< /p>

The tuition cost isnt the only expense youll have to pay as a college student. Aside from tuition, there are a variety of other out-of-pocket expenses associated with education. Accommodation costs are one of the most significant costs associated with college. According to a poll, people that live on campus at the University of Oklahoma must pay a monthly accommodation fee of $1,221 USD. And the numbers continue to rise. Even while the rent may appear to be a bit low, ancillaries like utilities, parking, laundry, and the like add up to be no less expensive than on-campus housing.
The concern that emerges when such dire conditions of student housing accommodations are considered is, Is there a remedy? Luckily, there is one! Pupils anticipate using mixed financial packages that include scholarships, grants, and study loans, to manage their education expenses. The number of undergraduate aid programs reduces various educational costs, such as tuition and living expenses. Students regard scholarships to be the most practical of these financial help packages. This is due to the fact that they are not required to refund the money. Scholarships, on the other hand, are only given to a few students. The rest of the problem is the same.
