Careers In The Fire Sprinkler Industry

A high school background in STEM is highly desirable for students wishing to enter the fire sprinkler industry. Depending on the job, you may or may not need a college education. Career paths include: fire sprinkler fitter, fire sprinkler designer/layout technician, fire protection engineer, and fire sprinkler contractor.

Fire sprinkler fitters do not require college degrees, but they will need special training for installing fire sprinkler systems. Many successful owners of fire sprinkler contracting companies began their careers as fire sprinkler apprentices. Fire sprinkler contractors work closely with architects, general contractors, code officials, building inspectors, and Fire Marshals to provide the appropriate fire protection for a structure.

Fire sprinkler design and layout technicians may learn computer-aided design and building information modeling . Fire protection engineers devote themselves to the study of fire behavior as it relates to automatic sprinkler, fire alarm, and special hazard fire suppression systems. Their research is often used to improve existing system components and technology.

There are various schools that specialize in fire protection-related degrees:

Additionally, online courses in fire sprinkler system layout as well as computer-aided design are available at AFSAs Fire Sprinkler eCampus.

Scholarship Spotlight: American Fire Sprinkler Association Scholarship Program

On fire for learning? The American Fire Sprinkler Association has a better idea. This organization offers an online scholarship contest for high school seniors in which you dont write an essay, but rather read one and take a short quiz. Each time a student gets a correct answer on the ten-question open book quiz, he or she earns one chance to win one of ten $2,000 scholarships. The scholarship is paid directly to the students school of choice as long as it is an accredited two or four year institution.

Sound too easy to be real? We were curious about that also, so we researched last years winners and had the good fortune to connect with University of Wisconsin freshman Jennifer Gohlke. Jennifer graduated in May 2014 from Pewaukee High School in Pewaukee, Wisconsin. She was looking for scholarships, but she preferred to not have to write another essay.

Heres what we love about this story: Rather than assuming that there just arent scholarships that dont require essays and applications, Jennifer did her research and found one that was a good fit. Winners of the AFSA scholarship are chosen strictly by lottery from among the applicants who submit correct answers to the quiz so, the chances of winning each year are determined by the number of entries into the contest.
