Air Force Aid Society Awards $26 Million In Education Grants And Scholarships

WASHINGTON, Sept. 15, 2022 — Air Force Aid Society awards $2.6 million to 1,723 scholars for the 2022-2023 academic year. Grants and scholarships range from $500 to $5,000.

We realize there is a student loan debt crisis in our country, said AFAS CEO, retired Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force Kaleth O. Wright. We remain committed to helping to ease the financial burden for so many of our military families through our education program. Without the grants and scholarships we offer Air and Space Force dependents, many would graduate with debt that could take years to repay.

Grants awarded each year are based on financial need and take into consideration the familys income and the students educational costs, while merit scholarships are given only to a select group. To be considered for a merit scholarship, freshman students must first complete the General Henry H. Arnold Education Grant application. Because the scholarships are merit-based, only freshman applicants with a 4.0 GPA are invited to apply.

Since launching the education program, AFAS has awarded over $186 million in General Henry H. Arnold Education Grants and $1.3 million in merit scholarships.

Applications for the General Henry H. Arnold Education Grant open each year in January. To learn more about eligibility requirements or application details, visit www.afas.org.

The High School Senior and Second Chance Contests have ended. AFSA will unveil a new scholarship contest in 2023. AFSA is proud of the success of its High School Senior and Second Chance scholarship contests. AFSAs Public Education & Awareness Committee has voted to redirect the existing scholarship contest to a new contest geared towards those students interested in a design career in the fire protection industry.

The new contest will aim to recruit and train beginning fire sprinkler system designers by awarding scholarships to attend AFSAs Beginning Design School. The application, eligibility requirements, and other details will be posted on this site in the coming months. The first scholarships will be awarded in 2023.

U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Jared Graham, a member of the 75th Logistics Readiness Squadron at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, and wife Laura pose with sons Dino and Tyson in their new all-terrain wheelchairs in 2021. The Grahams received a special needs grant offered by the Air Force Aid Society to purchase the adventurous wheels for their sons, enabling them to enjoy the outdoors as a family.

The process of applying for Air Force Aid Society grants and loans is moving entirely online at nine Air Force bases, which are taking part in a pilot program preceding the full rollout across the service.

The change should make it more convenient for airmen and their families to request emergency financial assistance as well as speed up the payment process, said officials at Ramstein Air Base in Germany, one of two participating bases in Europe. The other is RAF Mildenhall in England, while the Asia-Pacific regions trial run is happening at Japans Kadena Air Base.

The remaining participants are stateside. They are Lackland, Randolph, Travis, Barksdale, Langley and Seymour Johnson Air Force bases. The assistance application can be found at .

The selected locations will help identify any problems with the system in the run-up to the fulllaunch, said Angie Fields, a community readiness consultant at Ramsteins Military and Family Readiness Center, formerly the Air Force and Family Readiness Center.
